⚠️ Most people walk past this device without realizing it could be the difference between life and death at sea.
This is the Hydrostatic Release Unit (HRU) — a small but critical piece of lifesaving equipment fitted to liferafts. If a ship sinks before the crew can manually launch the liferaft, the HRU automatically activates when submerged underwater. It releases the liferaft from its cradle, allowing it to float to the surface. As the painter line stretches, the raft inflates automatically, giving survivors a fighting chance.

Rough breakdown: *ULCC* >320,000 DWT carries ∼2M+ barrels, *VLCC* 160-320k DWT ∼2M barrels, *Suezmax* 120-160k DWT ∼1M barrels, *Aframax* 80-120k DWT ∼750k barrels, *Panamax* 50-80k DWT ∼500k barrels. Bigger ship = more oil, but also fewer ports it can enter.
