NID STUDENTS' WORKS SHOWCASED AT SALONE DEL MOBILE, MILAN DURING 05-10 SEPT, 2021:-

This year a special edition of the fair Salone del Mobile, reframed as “Supersalone,” is being held in Milan, Italy, from 5th to 10th September 2021. The fair is the principal attraction of the Milan Design Week, with collateral exhibitions spread across the city. The event is a celebration of design and is accompanied by a vast public and cultural programme, open to the design industry and public. One of the main venues during this week, dedicated to design, has hosted a large exhibition entitled “The Lost Graduation Show – Class of 2020/21.” Created in response to the fact that recent design school graduates have been unable to present their work to the world, due to the global pandemic, this exhibition brings design schools and their alumni from all around the world together on one platform.

The exhibit has an exceptional selection of about 170 projects, coming from 48 different design schools from 22 countries, curated by Anniina Koivu. It was a tough choice given that almost 300 design schools in 59 countries responded to the open call in early June.

Displayed prominently in this exhibition are two graduation projects of Textile Design from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, selected through an extensive jury process. The students of Arjunvir Singh and Rashi Sharma worked under funding from the Ford Foundation Grant, provided through NID. These projects stemmed from their classroom work on craft documentation of the Khes in Punjab. Rashi’s graduation project called ‘Embroidered Memories - Narrating Partition stories through Phulkari’, used the medium of textile embroidered in Sainchi Phulkari of Punjab to express the anguish of those who faced the partition. Arjunvir’s graduation project called ‘Khes: The intact fabric of a torn nation’, explored the making and revival of the textile craft of Majnu Khes that has been lost in the partitioning of a land into two nations.

Please ink to a SuperSalone website where Rashi's interview is prominently portrayed.

The project in their own words -

RASHI SHARMA

The intent of this project is to make people realize through an exhibition how a piece of cloth can hold significance in one’s life because of the events they witnessed, in this instance the partition of India. It also emphasizes the need for the preservation of common historical and cultural assets between India and Pakistan, along with promoting material memory. Hand-embroidered textile panels narrate stories of migration and Khes through a craft of Punjab called Sainchi Phulkari

ARJUNVIR SINGH

Majnu Khes is a textile craft that was affected by the partition of India amongst various other things. My project aims at informing the audience about the extinction of this craft post India’s partition. Along with that, Arjunvir present a hypothesis on how the Majnu Khes patterns are related to the floor plans of Mughal gardens, the‘Charbaghs’ (which were also based on four-fold symmetry) and were a prominent element in Islamic architecture.

Session 04 - The Sound Studio - Paul Purgas & American Artists in India 1970-71 - Alexander Keefe | Friday, Sep 10th, 19:30 hours
NID Archives' Public Programmes 2021-22 E.A.T. India

For Registration Visit: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Fr0D73MnTUqY7Af0i0eKwA

In Session 04 of the series, writer and critic Alexander Keefe will discuss his research into the archives, contexts, and stories behind the program American Artists in India 1970-71, which turned out to be the only one of EAT’s plans for India that came to real fruition, albeit only once; what had been envisioned as a recurring exchange was never repeated. This will be followed by Paul Purgas’ talk pivoted around his explorations into the work of the composers at the electronic music studio at NID & their dialogue with David Tudor & E.A.T.

Alexander Keefe is a writer and critic living in Claremont, California. His work has appeared in Cabinet, Bidoun, East of Borneo, Marg, and Artforum, among others. In 2014 he completed Sarkari Shorts, a year-long online excavation of documentary films produced by the Government of India during the Cold War. He has presented his research at MoMA PS1, The Kitchen, HKW Museum, Asia Art Archives, and elsewhere. A 2010 grantee of the Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program, he has also received a Fulbright for research in India and currently holds the Inaugural Alan Erasmus Fellowship in Unpopular Culture at NYU’s Colloquium for Unpopular Culture. His current projects are related to the archaeology of sound in India; and the late dancer Shanta Rao.

Paul Purgas is a London based artist and electronic musician working with sound, performance and installation often exploring the dialogues between Eastern and Western design and sonic histories. Originally trained as an architect and a graduate of the Royal College of Art he has presented projects with Tate Britain, Tramway and Cambridge University and is currently a resident artist at Somerset House. He has written for several art and design publications and recently contributed to the essay collection Unsound:Undead released through MIT Press. His ongoing research into the history of the electronic music studio at the National Institute of Design was developed into the documentary 'Electronic India' with BBC Radio 3.

The Archives Public Programs inaugural series taps into the period of the E.A.T. happenings in India, retracing the historical trajectories and residues of the exchanges that took place then. Through an assembly of online lectures, conversations, revisitations and performances, the series is an attempt to re-read the ‘E.A.T. in India’ chapter from our contemporary location.

*** All session recordings will be shared after the series concludes ***
