Ethical Tribing: Connecting the Next Generation to Israel in the Digital Era
Congratulation to Joanna Landau on the publication of her new book: "Ethical Tribing: Connecting the Next Generation to Israel in the Digital Era".
In this book Landau, along with co-author Michael Golden, is taking on a major task: how to connect the seemingly "un-cool" Israel to younger demographics.
Since official Israel, for the most part, did not properly invest in the cultivation of its own brand, this becomes not only a very difficult connection to establish, but also an existential need.
As official Israel is drifting away from the global agenda (for example, climate risks are nowhere to be found on Israel's official agenda), Landau's book becomes all the more important.
Joanna comes from a long line of people who greatly contributed to Zionism and Israel's prosperity. Among her many achievements, she is the founder of Vibe Israel and active in the promotion of Israel's positioning in the world through Tel Aviv Global and many more.
This book is yet another significant contribution in line with the great tradition of her family. Kol Hakavod.

It was a true delight to address the students at Tel Aviv University about the future of public diplomacy.

Pelé, a Name That Became Shorthand for Perfection
A beautiful NYT tribute to Pele’ who died at 82.
Since TV broadcast (and commercial media in general) was not available in Israel until the early 1970’s, most of us did not see Pele’ play in real time.
The only exception was his last World Cup appearance in Mexico, in 1970, the year (limited) television broadcast started in Israel. It was his third World Cup victory and also the first World Cup that was globally televised in color.
Yet, through big screen films and news reels, children like myself were able to witness his greatness.
His style was the epitome of creativity: a unique combination of dance and football. Pele’ captivated the hearts of so many because of never-seen-before moves, even in today’s standards. Thanks to old footage a whole new generation is able to appreciate his genius.
Pele’ possessed two other elements that are visibly absent from today’s stardom system in sports:
One, total loyalty to his club and nation. He never really left Brasil (although he did play for NY Cosmos). Pele’ remained synonymous with his nation.
Two, commitment to the fans. He never acted as if he is bigger than the game itself.
None of the big stars that followed him, in all sports, had this rare combination, including MJ, LBJ, Maradona etc.
What a legacy. RIP
Pelé, a Name That Became Shorthand for Perfection The best gauge of what Pelé meant to soccer is that he was synonymous with excellence even before people saw him play.

American-born Israeli basketball star Willie Sims died yesterday at 64.
I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2004 while he played for the "Israeli Basketball Legends" team that came to raise money in New York, post 9/11, for the victims' families. This was done through the America-Israel Friendship League, the New York Board of Rabbis and the Consulate General of Israel in New York.
You can read more about that incredible charity game we organized in 2004 right here: https://www.jta.org/2004/05/18/lifestyle/israelis-n-y-firefighters-play-hoops-for-charity
Willie was humble and gentle.
At Louisiana State University, where he played under coach Dale Brown from 1977-81, he was known as the "best sixth man".
Coach Brown said: “Willie was such a beacon of light. He was a great person, and he was a great player, too. He had a number of opportunities to play virtually anywhere, but he loved LSU and we were very fortunate he chose to come here."
In Israel he was known as one of the most successful and moving Aliyah stories: he came to play at the Maccabiah Games and stayed... he loved Israel and Israel loved him. RIP dear Willie.

Meet Israeli scientist Prof. Dan Peer: he was the first researcher in the world to prove that the CRISPR genome editing system could be used to treat aggressive metastatic cancer.
The researchers at Prof. Peer’s lab developed a novel technology – a lipid nanoparticle-based delivery system that specifically targets cancer cells and destroys them by genetic manipulation.
The system, called CRISPR-LNPs, carries a genetic messenger (messenger RNA), which encodes for the CRISPR enzyme Cas9 that acts as molecular scissors that cut the cells’ DNA.

Israel is punching way above its weight with six universities in the top 100, one in the top 10 (TAU), two in the top 15 and five in the top 50:
Tel Aviv University #7
Technion #15
