Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

Behold, I am against thee, saith YAHAWAH of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock.

Goode was born as Sarah Elisabeth Jacobs in 1850 in Toledo, Ohio, the same year as the Fugitive Slave Act was enacted. Sarah Goode was the second of seven children of Oliver and Harriet Jacobs, both described in public records as mulattos.

She was born into slavery and when the American Civil War ended she was granted her freedom. The family moved to Chicago, Illinois where she met and married Archibald "Archie" Goode, who was originally from Wise County, Virginia; they would have six children, of whom three would live to adulthood.

Goode invented a folding cabinet bed which helped people who lived in tight housing to utilize their space efficiently. At the time of her invention, housing in New York City was expanding upwards, but became restricted in 1885 when New York City passed a law that restricted buildings to be under 80 feet, as to combat commercial buildings becoming too tall. Tenement buildings usually had a footprint of 25 feet by 100 feet.

Goode heard of this problem from customers of her furniture store in Chicago, and set out to make a solution. Goode's bed could be folded up, and it looked like a desk, with room for storage.

She received a patent for it on July 14, 1885, and given patent number #322,177. Her invention was the precursor to the Murphy bed, which was patented in 1900.

Her goal was to balance out the weight of the folding of the bed for it to be easily lifted up, folding and unfolding and to secure the bed on each side so that when folding the bed it would stay in its place. She provided supplementary support to the center of the bed when it is unfolded

Goode died on April 8, 1905 at the age of 50.

Joseph Richard "Nigerian" Winters (August 29, 1816 – November 29, 1916)[1] was an African-American abolitionist and inventor who, on May 7, 1878 received U.S. Patent number 203,517 for a wagon-mounted fire escape ladder.

On April 8, 1879, he received U.S. Patent number 214,224 for an "improvement" on the ladder. On May 16, 1882, he received U.S. Patent number 258,186 for a fire escape ladder that could be affixed to buildings. It is often erroneously cited that Winters was the original inventor of the wagon mounted fire escape. Winters' version was patented 29 years after George Huttman and George Kornelio initially introduced the idea in 1849.

However, Winters' ladder replaced the wooden ladder with a metal frame and parallel steps. Winters' innovation was utilized by the Chambersburg, Pennsylvania fire department who mounted the ladder on a horse-drawn wagon.

Joseph R. Winters was born in Leesburg, Virginia to an African-American brickmaker and a 👉🏿Shawnee Indian mother, who was the daughter of a noted herbalist and medical practitioner called the "Indian doctor woman."

The family relocated to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania around 1840. Joseph Winters worked as a farmer, and later as a mechanic for the Cumberland Valley Railroad. He was a noted fisherman and hunter; "Black and white residents long remembered him for his great nature knowledge and skills, especially in fishing and fly making."

He was also a poet and lyricist, who composed a song supporting the 1900 presidential campaign of William Jennings Bryan, as well as another song entitled "Ten Days after the Battle of Gettysburg." He also wrote an autobiography with the same title, but no copies seem to have survived.

During the time Winters lived in Chambersburg, he was active in the Underground Railroad. It has been said that it was Winters who arranged the famous meeting between Frederick Douglass and John Brown before the latter's abortive attempt to take the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in 1859.

Winters died in 1916 and is buried in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Chambersburg. In 2005, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission erected a historical marker honoring Winters at the Junior Hose & Truck Company #2 of Chambersburg.

Quanah Parker (Comanche kwana, "smell, odor") (c. 1845 – February 20, 1911) was a war leader of the Quahadi ("Antelope") band of the Comanche Nation. He was born into the Nokoni ("Wanderers") band, the son of Comanche chief Peta Nocona and Cynthia Ann Parker, an Anglo-American who had been kidnapped as a child and assimilated into the tribe.

Following the apprehension of several Kiowa chiefs in 1871, Quanah emerged as a dominant figure in the Red River War, clashing repeatedly with Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie.

With European Americans deliberately hunting American bison, the Comanches' primary sustenance, into extinction, Quanah eventually surrendered and peaceably led the Quahadi to the reservation at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Quanah Parker was never elected chief by his people but was appointed by the federal government as principal chief of the entire Comanche Nation, and became a primary emissary of southwest indigenous Americans to the United States legislature.

In civilian life, he gained wealth as a rancher, settling near Cache, Oklahoma. Though he encouraged Christianization of Comanche people, he also advocated the syncretic Native American Church alternative, and passionately fought for the legal use of pe**te in the movement's religious practices.

He was elected deputy sheriff of Lawton in 1902. After his death in 1911, the leadership title of Chief was replaced with Chairman; Quanah is thereby described as the "Last Chief of the Comanche," a term also applied to Horseback.

He is buried at Chief's Knoll on Fort Sill. Many cities and highway systems in southwest Oklahoma and north Texas, once southern Comancheria, bear references to his name.

Wakonda: the name used by the Omaha tribe for Wakan Tanka, the "Great Spirit" of balance according to Native American mythology.

Long before “Wakanda” became famous as the fictional African nation in Black Panther, the name already existed on the American landscape. In Menomonie, Wisconsin, Wakanda Park contains an ancient Indigenous burial-mound complex overlooking Lake Menomin and the Red Cedar River. Three large oval mounds remain visible today. Archaeologists documented another seventeen mounds below the ridge, many of which were later flooded when a dam raised the level of Lake Menomin in the 1950s.

Radiocarbon dating placed them roughly between A.D. 1000 and 1400. Archaeologists found human burials and stone concentrations interpreted as altars, including one burial involving cremation and a clay face covering or mask. Similar burial practices have been documented at other mound sites in Wisconsin.

Blood quantum is a government-created racial classification system that measures a person’s supposed “degree of Indian blood.” The Bureau of Indian Affairs still issues Certificates of Degree of Indian Blood, or CDIBs, based on documentary descent from ancestors listed on official tribal rolls. DNA tests are NOT accepted by the BIA as proof that someone belongs to a specific federally recognized tribe.

The system itself is not traditional to our people. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian notes that blood quantum was imposed by the U.S. government in the early 20th century as a way of defining and limiting Native citizenship, and that many have argued that the system was structured in a way that could reduce tribal populations over generations.

Native identity has often been filtered through government-created records, rolls, blood fractions, and legal definitions rather than DNA alone or personal claims of ancestry. Those classifications can affect access to federal services, recognition, and documentation, while actual tribal citizenship remains a matter of tribal sovereignty.

Blood quantum is not DNA. It is a legal classification system with a long federal history. Know the difference between ancestry, government recognition, and tribal citizenship.

California’s Native peoples experienced one of the most catastrophic population collapses in North American history during the nineteenth century. California State Parks estimates that the Native population declined by roughly 80 percent between 1850 and 1880, while the California Judicial Branch notes an even steeper decline over the broader 1840–1870 period, from about 200,000 people to roughly 12,000.

This devastation was not caused by one factor. Disease played a major role, but so did forced removal, starvation, enslavement, land seizure, massacres, and state-sanctioned violence. California’s 1850 Act for the Government and Protection of Indians enabled Native people to be removed from their lands and allowed Native adults and children to be subjected to forced labor and indenture.

The state itself has since formally acknowledged this history. In 2019, California apologized to Native peoples for violence, exploitation, dispossession, and what the governor’s executive order called the attempted destruction of tribal communities.

And yet we survived.

California Native peoples resisted, endured, preserved their languages and traditions, rebuilt communities, and remain here today. That survival is part of the story too.

AMERINDIAN OURSTORY

Before the Civil War, numerous enslaved people made the treacherous journey to Mexico in a bold quest for freedom that historians are now unearthing.

Until recently, the southbound Underground Railroad, as some scholars call it, has been largely overlooked, mainly because it left so few traces in surviving records.

And though the journeys of enslaved people to Mexico are of the utmost importance, the scale of the southern migration was more modest, numbering between 3,000 and 10,000 people, compared with an estimated 30,000 to 100,000 who fled north of the Mason-Dixon line.

While there was no organized network of assistance, no celebrated “conductors” like Harriet Tubman guiding them to the next safe haven, slaves escaping to Mexico did sometimes receive help along the way.

After independence from Spain, in 1821, Mexico passed radical antislavery laws, and Mexicans at all levels of society were serious about enforcing them.

This was well known by enslaved people on the U.S. side of the border. Indeed, more than three-quarters of the fugitive slaves caught in Texas between 1837 and 1861, were heading to Mexico.

The earliest examples of people escaping south are from the late 17th century. In the Carolinas, enslaved men and women ran away from the rice plantations to Spanish Florida, where they were able to arm themselves against their former enslavers.

In 1693 King Charles II of Spain decreed that all fugitive slaves would be free in Florida. In 1733 a caveat was added: To gain their freedom, fugitives had to convert to Catholicism and declare loyalty to the Spanish crown.

In 1750 the same promise was extended to the entire Viceroyalty of New Spain, which included all of present-day Mexico and nearly all of the American West, plus Florida.
