Welcome to Women of the Wall! Read more about our work, get involved, and share your thoughts and experiences with us www.womenofthewall.org.il

Today, Rosh Hodesh Shevat marks 97 days that our brothers and sisters are still held hostage in Gaza.
We came to the Kotel this morning to pray for them to come home now!

Rosh Hodesh Shevat from the Kotel

The weather forecast for tomorrow alligns with how we feel - cold, rainy and stormy. For some, it is a reason to stay in bed, for WOW - it is a reason to go to the Kotel and pray, together as a community.

Rosh Hodesh Shevat with WOW - join us in person or via Facebook live and pray with us!

"Can we please book a few presentations for the summer?" a tour provider asked us yesterday. We love her optimism!

When we say "Am Yisrael Chai", we mean the entire “Am”, without distinction.
We envision Israel as the true national home for all Jewish people, and thereby fortify the alliance between us, which has proven to be more vital than ever since October 7th, 2023.

As a sign of our commitment and dedication, Women of the Wall wrote the following "declaration of intent" that was signed by dozens of Jewish organizations.
As 2023 is almost ending, we turn to you to make your final gift of the year to WOW.

Together - we will bridge the gap between Israel & Diaspora Jewry.

Women of the Wall stand guard on the border between a tolerant, equal Israel and the anarchy of a zealous, toxic and destructive strain of Judaism. We are like the canaries in the coal mine, our Jewish heart in Jerusalem- warning of great danger and potential failure of extremism.”

We received a surprising phone call yesterday morning from Chaya, a 17-year-old who is currently devoting her time to cooking and delivering food to soldiers.

"During my volunteer work, I met female fighters. A year ago, I would of looked down at them, claiming women don't belong in combat unites. But today, I look at them in awe.

Chaya continued and said that "It made me realize that I don't know everything and that maybe I could be right and the other side could be right too.
I came to the Kotel once while you were praying and I joined the protest against you. Today I understand that I was wrong".

She apologized and hung up.
Unity is not uniformity.

“Six (o’clock) after the war” is an expression that is used a lot in Israel these days. We use it to refer to an urgent matter that should be addressed immediately after the war.

At six o’clock after this war is over, we will likely find that one side is still working on maintaining their full monopoly over Judaism in Israel - budget, laws, education system - the whole package.
Women of the Wall have always been on the frontlines of the battle of religious freedom in Israel.
we need your help to make sure that Israel is the homeland for ALL Jews, always.

Today we mark the 10th of Tevet, a day of fast that marks the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia which ended 19 months later with the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple.
This date was declared as the General Day of Kaddish, for Holocaust victims whose date of death is unknown.
This year, we all need to take a moment, and mourn the many beautiful, talented, sweet people that we lost in this war and say Kaddish for them.

And let us say "Amen" :(

'You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah' speaks to the meaningful impact of religious rituals for Jewish girls 21/12/2023

In non-Orthodox synagogue rituals today, girls read directly and in front of the whole congregation from the Torah scrolls. Traditional Orthodox Judaism, however, does not allow women to read publicly from the Torah scrolls. Orthodox congregations may call upon a young woman to speak about the meaning of the day’s Torah reading, or allow her to read from the Torah in a women’s-only service.

Today in Israel, clashes led by the ultra-Orthodox over the appropriateness of women reading from Torah scrolls at the Western Wall continue to erupt. At times, these have been violent.

Read more about this in the attached article.
WOW will continue to fight for women to be able to read Torah at the Kotel and have an equal part in Jewish life.

'You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah' speaks to the meaningful impact of religious rituals for Jewish girls ‘You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah’ may seem worlds apart from the growth and appeal of ‘by and for women only’ films produced by Orthodox Jewish women, but all these films share a focus on the potential of Jewish ritual.

Unity does not mean uniformity. Like all families, we might have disagreements, but it is our obligation to extend an olive branch and accept that Israel is the only Jewish country in the world. For all Jews. From all streams of Judaism.

This is what resilience looks like.
We will be at the Kotel each month, rain or shine until women will receive the basic right to read Torah at the holy site.

We need you by our side, to sing the song of freedom.

It is as if the sky this morning decided to join us in tears with the hard news we keep receiving.
Am Israel Chai.

A rainy rosh hodesh from the Kotel

"Is it OK if I also light a hanukkiah?" asked us a sweet young girl.
The smile on her face when we said 'yes' was worth everything.
She is the reason we came to the Kotel last night, so she can grow up knowing that she has an equal place in Jewish life.

Join us tomorrow (Wednesday), 7:00 AM IST as we welcome in the month of Tevet.

As we continue to hope and pray for miracles to happen, WOW will not stop working and fighting towards equality for ALL Jews.

Many women and children who happened to be at the Kotel tom ght joined our candle lighting event, thanking us for being there and allowing them to participate in an active way.

Happy Hanukkah.

Tonight (Monday, December 11) at 6:00 PM IST, we will gather at the Kotel to light the Hanukkiyah. There is no reason women should not be part of the main candle lighting.

The holiday of light is about bravery - Women and men alike.

Join us.

We will soon gather to create light in the darkness during Chanukah, and on Rosh Hodesh Tevet, we will gather at the Kotel as we have for 35 years- through rain and snow, war and peace, harmony and dissonance. We will sustain, we will continue to pray, and we need your help.”
Please consider including Women of the Wall in your year end giving.

In the “Iron Swords” war, the phenomenal heroism of women has been revealed, but not for the first time - our history is full of heroic women fighters; From Yael who killed Sisra, Judith from the Hanukkah story, Hannah Szenes and many more.

The murderous attack by Hamas seared the female contribution into the ethos of the IDF, the State of Israel and the entire Jewish people.

On Rosh Hodesh Tevet we celebrate Eid al-Banat: the festival of Women. The holiday elevates female power - the bravery, wisdom and sisterhood of women throughout the generations.

Join WOW! Be part of our sisterhood.
Happy Hanukkah.

As we rejoice with the return of each hostage, we continue to remember those who are still held hostage in Gaza, under horrible conditions.

“As you know there has been a debate in Israel in recent years if women should be in combat units. I say to you: Sometimes you must speak a lot to explain something, but I think that in this case we got an answer with no words, an answer of action and fighting.”

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said today when meeting with female tank crews from the mixed-gender Caracal Battalion that battled on the Gaza border during the October 7 assault

Every night of Hanukkah, another candle is added, bringing in more light.
Exactly like the past few days - each hostage that came back home, added so much light into the darkness.

We continue to pray for the return of all of them back home!

Even during these difficult times, Yated Neeman (the Ultra-Orthodox newspaper) still makes sure to blur the photos of female hostages.
This horrible photo reminds us that the we till must fight for equality for women.

May we hear more and more good news this week

As our American friends are celebrating Thanksgiving, we hope that we can all be thankful for good news.
May this Shabbat be a good and peaceful Shabbat

We are all waiting for them at home.

‘Today we come together as a family, one big 'mishpacha', to march for Israel,” said President Isaac Herzog to the 300,000 people who gathered in Washington, DC, in support of Israel.

Being part of a family means being there for one another, in good times and bad, for better or for worse. No family member is above the other, and all deserve to feel that their love is reciprocated.

Unity does not mean uniformity. Like all families, we might have disagreements, but it is our obligation to extend an olive branch and accept that Israel is the only Jewish country in the world. For all Jews. From all streams of Judaism.

Lia, a six year-old sweet girl from Texas wrote to us this morning, asking that we put the following note in the Western Wall for her:
"Please G-od, bring all of the hostages back home now, I am afraid for the kids who are my age. PLEASE"

"You will not find a greater mitzvah than Pidyon Shvuyim (Redeeming captives)

For the past 34 years, Women of the Wall have been fighting for the right of girls and women to speak out and not be silenced.
Today, World Children’s Day, we are raising our voices for all of the girls and boys who are held captive by Hamas.
We and the entire Jewish people are here for them and demand that they return home immediately!

Libi, WOW's program manager has been 'called to the flag' and will be helping the evacuees who have no home to return to.

Wishing us all a quite week with only good news.
