Parsha Bamidbar: Lessons to be learned from the census of the Jewish People in the desert
This week Parsha, Bamidbar, which is usually read in the weeks before Shavuot, the time of receiving the Torah, teaches us important lessons about what we, as a People, need to do, not only to receive the Torah, but also to survive as a nation. The census, counting the number of men over the age of 20, with the exception of the Levites, totaled approximately 600,000 souls. It is also said that the number of letters in the Torah, the five books of Moses, are also equal to 600,000. What is the connection between these things and how does this help us to become better Jews and to prepare for receiving the Torah on Shavuot? These questions will be discussed in this short Torah lesson.

Yom Kippur-How to Achieve Atonement and Come Closer to G-d
On Yom Kippur, the day in which Jews around the world pray for a good year, not only for themselves, but for all of the world, what are the obstacles that we face? The prayers are long and require complete concentration and intention to come closer to G-d. What about those of us who are not well versed in saying the prayers, or do not have the appropriate intention for prayers, how do we achieve atonement and pray for a good year? This short Torah lesson will recount a story illustrating how the simplest of prayers can reach the highest heights.

Rosh Hashanah - Returning to G-d as the King of the world
On Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, there are two main themes that set the tone for this Holy Day. One is the Coronation of G-d as the King of the world. The other is to do Teshuva, repentance. The Hebrew word Teshuva means to return, and it is our job to return to the service of G-d. Recognizing G-d as the King of the world, and knowing that a king has servants, we must strive to be a servant of G-d. We will illustrate this concept by referring to some of the prayers of this Holy day.

Parsha Netzavim – Unity and Equality
This week's Torah reading, which is always read the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah, teaches us an important lesson about the need for unity as we approach these Holy days, as well as teaching us that, in the eyes of G-d, we are seen differently than the manner in which we see each other. Therefore, we need to guard ourselves against thinking that one person is more important then another, or that one life is better than another.

This week's Dvar Torah with Rabbi Daniel N Korobkin: In parshat Nitzavim the Torah teaches that sometimes it's the tiniest adjustments in our lives that fix everything else that isn’t working.

Parsha Ki Tavoh- Serving G-d With Happiness
In this week’s Torah reading, the Torah recounts the “Tochacha”, the curses warning the Jewish people what will happen if they do not follow the commandments. After the recitation of the list of horrible things, the Torah tells us “this is because you would not serve the Lord your G-d in joy and gladness over the abundance of everything”. The phrase seems to be telling us that it is not due to failure to observe the commandments, but rather failure to observe them with joy. The commentators discuss the meaning of this and the lesson that we can derive from this in serving G-d in every way possible.

This week's Dvar Torah with Rabbi Daniel N Korobkin: The Torah states that in addition to writing the Torah text on the stones, the stones needed to be coated with some kind of plaster or mortar.
In the Talmud Rabbi Yehuda says that the scribes chiseled the Hebrew text onto the bare stones and then plastered over the surface. Rabbi Shimon says that first the plaster was applied, and the scribes used a stylus to inscribe the text onto the soft plaster. What does this difference of opinion teach us?

Parsha Ki Tayze - Protective measures, Faith and Effort
In this week's Torah reading of Ki Tayze, we are commanded to put a fence around the roof of your home, when you have a new house, so that our acts should not endanger anybody else. If we have strong faith (Emunah) in G-d, with the knowledge that everything that happens to us is the will of G-d, why make the effort? There are many places in the Torah where we are commanded to not do things that would injure somebody else. Why add another commandment to protect others by building a fence, when many other specific actions are mentioned in the Torah, which must be undertaken to protect others? In addition, what does this commandment have to do with Rosh Hashanah? This short Torah lesson will discuss these concepts.

This week's Dvar Torah with Rabbi Daniel N Korobkin: Our parsha is famous for its apparently disjointed mitzvot that seemingly have little or nothing to do with each other. Dig a little deeper and we see that the Torah is addressing the dichotomous nature of man, and his constant struggle between body and soul.

Torah Thoughts by Rabbi Nathan Davidovich
Parsha Shoftim and the month of Elul – Judge yourself and not others.
In this week's Torah reading of Shoftim, we are commanded to a point judges and officers over all of our gates. Many commentaries interpret this as a lesson for each of us to guard the gates of our senses so as not to violate the will of G-d. Others interpret this as a message to not judge others. Both messages are very relevant to Rosh Chodesh Elul, as we approach the days of judgment of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. A short story will illustrate this point and, hopefully, will enable us to keep from judging others.

STARTS SUNDAY AUGUST 20: The Foundation Stone (אבן השתיה) is believed to be the point from which creation of the world took off. It is also believed to be the place of the Kodesh HaKodeshim, the spot where the Kohen Gadol entered on Yom Kippur. Join Rabbi Yehoshua Geller as he explores its place in Jewish tradition and it’s significance during the Yamim Noraim.

This week's Dvar Torah with Rabbi Daniel N Korobkin: It should not be surprising that a number of commentaries look at the Torah’s commandment to appoint a king over the nation as a metaphor for appointing a ruler over oneself, a guiding principle that allows one to lead a life of discipline, dignity, and integrity. Why?
Parshat Shoftim 2023 Be the Ruler!

STARTS TUESDAY AUGUST 22: Every year prior to Rosh Hashanah Jews say special prayers called Selichot. Depending on the tradition some start a month before and some start within the week before the New year.
