Corona Magic!*
Here are some things that have been working out better than expected:
1. The Health Ministry – Misrad Habriyut *5400 – they have never been more amenable! They actually answer the phone in a timely fashion and give clear, relevant answers (and not just regarding Corona – my clients have many other, often complicated, issues)!
2. The new government central number (my secret) –
They have helped me with real estate transactions, when the Property Tax office either did not answer, or was incapable.
They helped with Transport Ministry matters – my client had been waiting for months for a new drivers’ license; I got it for her in one phone call!
They’ve helped me with technical difficulties with the Justice Ministry website.
3. The Rabbinic Court – have been very helpful in obtaining old files for my clients – various judgements, including Probate orders from years ago.
4. Deadlines – by the banks, courts, tax authorities, insurance companies, etc. have all been graciously extended.
5. General Professional Flexibility – my experience has been a generosity of spirit amongst lawyers, accountants, and between them and their clients. Notably, Macabi Health Services has been outstanding in their administrative patience and care!
6. And, the winner is:
Bituach Leumi! They have come through for the elderly and the disabled in a way that no seasoned pessimist could have predicted.

Q&A for Seniors
Q: After my mother passed away, her cleaner asked us for compensation, how can that be?
A: If the cleaner worked for more than one year (11 months also counts), for the same amount of hours every month, and the same times every week (all this is more or less), they should be paid one month’s salary per year of work as compensation for losing their job.
Q: Oy! My father needs a foreign worker. What do I do now?
A: Be in touch with your father’s Kupa; they will direct you to the social worker who will help you fill out forms, arrange for a current cognitive and functional evaluation of your father, and get the paper work in order. Then they will give you a list of personnel companies, who will find you the worker. The issue is that the foreign worker will need a current, valid work visa.
Q: Do I really need a Will?
A: If you live alone, in a rental, and your bank account is mainly in overdraft, then, no, you do not need a Will. A person with family and or assets should definitely have a Will.
Q: So I can just write it by hand?
A: Any judge who is shown a handwritten Will, by the beneficiaries of an Estate with property in it, real or otherwise, will wonder what is wrong with the scenario, why is there no typed, official document, etc. The exception is the case of someone who is really dying and needs a Will fast; this has it’s own procedure in the law.
Q: I heard that a general power of attorney is enough for me to take care of my aging parents.
A: That’s not a question, and what you heard is incorrect. There is a general power of attorney between properly functioning adults, for financial purposes. The banks each require their own p of a, to be signed at the bank. Only a medical power of attorney gives you the right to make medical decisions. A power of attorney becomes invalid if the person who signed is no longer able to communicate (coma, dementia, etc)
Q: So what do you suggest?
A: There is a document called a continuous power of attorney (Yipuy koach mitmashech), which is the exception to the rule. This is a fast-track on-line procedure which can be executed by specially qualified lawyers only.
Q: I recently retired; I worked in four or five places over the years, and my papers are not organized at all. How do I figure out where my pension money went to all these years?
A: The Treasury Ministry runs a website called Har Hakesef (mountain of money). There you can find lists of all your pensions, and all your bank accounts. However, the site is known to be less than 100% accurate.
Q: My wife and I have a joint bank account, so when one of us goes, G-d forbid, the other one will have full access to the account, right?
A: Not necessarily. Make sure you have a document from your bank, which is loosely translated as a survivorship clause (Arichut Yamim); this will enable the remaining spouse to continue to pay bills, and do “routine” banking, for a while, until a Probate order is obtained.
Q: What if the bank freezes my account?
A: Call me.*

Olim Empowered! Seniors Empowered!
Wait, what do these two groups have in common? What about Israeli seniors – don’t they already know everything?
What each of these groups has in common with the others, is that each is missing a piece of the puzzle, through no fault of their own.
Here are some “day after” scenarios:
Finances: Olim and seniors need to have planned for their financial future, budgeted and allotted funds for various needs, before they became Olim and seniors. Afterwards, before it’s too late, planning is also useful. Where is your money coming from? Overseas? Your local employer? Your pension fund?
How many of us, who have worked at more than one job, know precisely what pension funds we have monies with?
Insurance: How many of us have exact duplicate medical insurance? How many of us have life insurance policies that do include savings? Who has a policy that does not? Who just turned 70 (mazal tov!) and no longer has life insurance altogether?
The Future: No matter what your marital status, or the size of your family YOU MUST HAVE A WILL. I cannot stress this enough. I know widows who are chained to their houses, because their children, their new partners in ownership (there was no Will) do not want to sell the house. I know children from a first marriage, who live abroad, wanted nothing to do with their late mother’s estate (again, no Will), and had no choice but to travel for hours in order to sign forms at an Israeli Consulate. They actually had to pay to give up their legal portion in the Estate.
Olim and seniors face a variety of potential complications, when they reach their special milestone; I can assist, so that it doesn’t become a millstone around their necks.

A decided to probate his fathers will. What could a lawyer possibly know more than he, a successful businessman? After a year and a half of unsuccessful attempts to probate the will, and unable, therefore, to register his father’s home in his name, A called me. In three months the estate was fully settled, and all titles properly registered.

B, a lawyer in the US, had a client with property in Israel. The client passed away. B spoke with several lawyers here, who were unable to assist him in locating the property. B called me; I persisted, found the property, probated the will, and had the titles properly registered in the names of the beneficiaries.

C, D, and E have complicated medical conditions. After unsuccessfully begging Bituach Leumi to assist them, in any way at all, each decided to call me. Within months, each of C,D and E were granted the correct percentage of disability, and their stipends, etc were all in order.

This is what we can do for you as well! And much more!

A and B are new Olim, one in Jerusalem, the other in Gush Etzion. Neither came to Israel with more than rudimentary Hebrew skills. Neither knew how to navigate a system that was totally foreign to them.
A called me, chose my “navigate the system” training program, and is now sailing through the system without a hitch.
B asked me to just keep navigating for her; all her paperwork has been systemized, including service contracts, insurance and leases on properties. She owes no money, and no one owes her; she knows how much she’s paying for the services she gets, there’s no duplication. B knows I can keep saving her money. I can do this for you as well!

F and G are new Olim, one in Jerusalem, the other in Gush Etzion. Neither came to Israel with more than rudimentary Hebrew skills. Neither knew how to navigate a system that was totally foreign to them.
F called me, chose my “navigate the system” training program, and is now sailing through the system without a hitch.
G asked me to just keep navigating for her; all her paperwork has been systemized, including service contracts, insurance and leases on properties. She owes no money, and no one owes her; she knows how much she’s paying for the services she gets, there’s no duplication. G knows I can keep saving her money.

Which brings me to H, who was paying two separate insurance companies the same amount for exactly the same coverage. And J, who didn’t need most of his extra insurance coverage, due to a previously arranged policy, through an earlier employer, which J had forgotten about. Both H and J have saved thousands of shekels over the last few years, having called me to stream-line their coverage.
I do this, and much more. I am an Israeli attorney, with perfect English; I understand the needs of Olim and Seniors.
I can help you through any transition; I can tackle problems and keep them from becoming legal issues.

Many of us have worked in more than one workplace over the years. Each employer has deducted pension funds for us; each fund may be with a different company.
This is very worth checking out, and consolidating - even before you retire, but certainly after.

TIME TO EXERCISE!!
[email protected]
Aleks Salkin is a personal trainer and exercise coach.
Here are his own words:
1) All first-time participants go through a movement screen to see where their bodies are currently to determine the best drills and exercises to practice in order to move forward safely and effectively. This individualization occurs throughout the length of time you spend in the class, and no matter what movements we work on, you will only ever do variations that are appropriate and safe for you. It is like personal training in a group setting)
2) We go through a movement sequence based on the aforementioned screen that helps warm you up and prepare you to move strongly, safely, and effectively toward your goals.
3) We work on basic body weight-only strength movements to help naturally and safely strengthen the core, legs, back, arms, neck, and every other nook and cranny of the body while simultaneously working on improving flexibility, mobility, and coordination.
4) All movements practiced in the class are selected specifically to make you stronger and fitter for day-to-day life - not just fit enough and strong enough to survive an exercise class. My students have told me that in addition to moving better, feeling younger, and feeling more confident in their own bodies, they are able to keep up with their kids and grandkids better, conquer daily tasks with greater ease, and suffer fewer aches as well as less stiffness and discomfort.
5) I also give out mini movement assignments via our WhatsApp group that help the ladies build on the progress we make on each class in as little as 5 minutes per day.

In Jerusalem, the the central bus station, all the way at the far end where the buses to Bnei Brak are located, in the Rav Kav office where they issue and CHANGE cards. Just show them your ID!
If you still have rides left on the card, so be it, but when you next re-fill the card, it'll be as a senior citizen with a 50% discount!
You're welcome!

also, you have the national call center for public transportation: *8787

Spousal Influence on Physical Activity in Middle-Aged and Older Adults

As we all know, low physical activity levels are a public health concern. As people age, many start limiting their physical activity level due to pain. Without someone there to encourage you to do more exercise, the level continues to go do and the pain may increase. An article in the American Journal of Epidemiology, found that individuals, regardless of gender, had higher odds of meeting physical activity recommendations if their spouse also met his or her recommendations. They concluded that changes in an individual's physical activity are positively associated with changes in his or her spouse's physical activity. With this in mind, go to my website to see what activities you and your spouse or friend can do together. There is no reason that keeping fit has to be boring or a drudge. Am. J. Epidemiol.
