Meet the Flamboyant Cuttlefish, a fav with many UW photographers. This little guy was foraging in the sand for snacks. The only cuttlefish known to be toxic, it’s capable of flashing hypnotic colors, probably as a warning sign for predators to stay away.

Juvenile Gurnard Lionfish.
A relatively uncommon species... I was fortunate to capture this small individual, about 4” in size, flaring its fins. On this dive I’d been using a snoot and was lucky to be able to effectively snoot this shot.

The Solar Powered Nudibranch! aka Phyllodesmium longicirrum.
Being bigger than most nudis - up to 6” - this species is able to draw energy from sunlight. While several other species are capable of doing the same, this one is the greatest example nudibranch photosynthesis.

Very nice to be awarded a top 10 spot in the underwater category of this year's "Close-Up Photographer of the Year" Awards. If you want to be wowed with an amazing collection of macro photography images, head to www.cupoty.com. In just seven years of existence this competition has become widely considered the biggest international competition specifically dedicated to macro and micro photography, so it's an honor to achieve this result and a place in their Year Book.
This image was taken at Horseshoe Bay in Komodo, Indonesia. The subject is a tiny, 3mm, Ladybug Amphipod sitting on a blue sea sq**rt. Using my camera settings I was able to blur the red background coral.

Always a sucker for a clown fish! Taken in the Lembeh Strait. Not a place you go with clown fish as the priority. And look at that stunning anemone!
