✅ Diana is a Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy at the Central European University

✅ She is a Vice Chair of Working Group III (Mitigation) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

✅ She received several awards, including the Hungarian Republic’s Presidential Award “Medium Cross” in 2008, the “White Lion” award in 2021, and the “Role Model” award in 2009.

🚫 There is a message propagated by powerful institutions that once we get the right kind of growth – a ‘healthy growth’ decoupled from capitalism’s sordid environmental record – the world won’t have to worry about growth per se.

🌍 As degrowthers, we know that the carbon-fetishism of green growth is at best a distraction.

📢 We are thrilled to announce our first keynote speaker - Kohei Saito!

✅ Associate professor of philosophy at the University of Tokyo, with a PhD in philosophy from the Humboldt University of Berlin.

✅ His 2017 book "Karl Marx’s Ecosocialism: Capital, Nature and the Unfinished Critique of Political Economy" was awarded the Isaac Deutscher Memorial Prize of 2018.

✅ Saito’s "'Capital' in the Anthropocene" (2020) was a pathbreaking interpretation of Marx’s theory of postcapitalism in the age of climate crisis.

✅ His next book "Marx in the Anthropocene", an argument for degrowth communism, will be published from the Cambridge University Press by the end of 2022.

👥 Within capitalism hegemonic ideologies and practices are established through domination which reproduces injustices and inequalities in environmental conditions, socioeconomic circumstances, gender, race and ability.

📰 In capitalist male-dominated narratives inequalities are embedded in values, meanings and symbols of everyday life.

🤝 The 2023 conference will provide a platform to reaffirm our community values and reassess the socio-climate impact our actions have.

✅ The conference is organised by a consortium of organisations and initiatives working on degrowth in Zagreb.

📅 The 9th International Degrowth Conference opens 29.8.2023. and ends 2.9.2023.

✅ The conference will accept academic and non-academic presentations.

📄 All submitters will be invited to participate in the peer-review.

Degrowth is an ecological transition framework that starts from a systems-thinking perspective and combines values of:
🌿 ecology,
👩‍⚖️ justice,
🌍 wellbeing and
🤝 democracy.

➡️ Degrowth has a theoretical grounding in Earth system science, ecological economics, political ecology and post-development.

➡️ A perspective on degrowth from the post-socialist semi-periphery of Croatia, with a turbulent transition to capitalism in hindsight, suggests that capitalist development can lead to dedevelopment, depopulation and environmental degradation — making an alternative pathway into a just and sustainable future not only necessary but also politically desirable.

🌍 A conference taking place in the region once priding itself on leading the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and alternative ‘globalisation’ visions provides a platform to ask where visions of a polycentric world are rooted today.

Planet, People, Care: It Spells Degrowth! – 9th International Degrowth Conference

9th International Degrowth Conference is coming to Zagreb! 😃

🐌 Following the great endurance and success of three (partly) online international conferences in Vienna, Manchester and The Hague, degrowth is committed to reigniting physical meetings at Zagreb's 2023 event entitled „Planet, People, Care: It Spells Degrowth!“.

📆 From August 29 to September 2, the conference will bring together activists, artists, academics, practitioners, political representatives, and the general public in presenting alternative readings of the most recent global shocks and possible pathways to care and resilience for people and the planet.

📣 The calls for the conference Special Sessions and research Presentations will open in autumn 2022.

We are looking forward to our degrowth, just transition guests with whom we can build a future we can believe in!
