October was Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, and while it’s already November, it’s never too late to talk about learning disabilities like dyscalculia. In my work with students, I’ve noticed that math anxiety and the belief of being “not good at math” are all too common. Many students come with a fixed mindset, seeing math as either boring or irrelevant. Changing these perceptions takes time, but it's critical to help students recognize their potential in math.

One of my biggest concerns is how often dyscalculia, a math-specific learning disability, goes undiagnosed. While there’s significant awareness around dyslexia, dyscalculia is frequently overlooked, and students are labeled as simply having “math gaps” or “struggling with math.” However, it’s estimated that 5-7% of the population have dyscalculia, yet few receive proper support.

While there are screeners and diagnostic tools available, none of them can accurately diagnose dyscalculia on their own. A comprehensive approach is essential, collecting multiple data points for a reliable diagnosis. Once identified, dyscalculia requires a targeted, individualized program—a commitment from both students and families— and this best happens when everyone at the table understands the diagnosis and the need for the targeted intervention.

As research shows, the sooner support begins, the better the outcomes. There’s a tremendous amount of work to be done, but I firmly believe that with the right tools and support, students can overcome math-related challenges and gain confidence in their abilities.
