1984 cheered it on, the 90s tore it apart, and nature/art brought it back to life.

Created by the citizens of Sarajevo as a “thank you” for the low-quality, expired canned beef sent as humanitarian aid during the 1990s siege.

The route was known as “Europe’s most dangerous road” because it was the only way into besieged Sarajevo and was constantly under sniper fire, shelling, and mines.

At the abandoned Igman Olympic Ski Jumps built for the 1984 Winter Olympics later became sniper positions during the siege of Sarajevo.

The striking Valley of Heroes Monument commemorates the 1943 Battle of Sutjeska, when Yugoslav Partisans were surrounded by a massive Axis offensive aiming to destroy the resistance and capture Josip Broz Tito.
Despite devastating casualties, the Partisans broke through the encirclement, making the battle one of the defining moments of WWII in Yugoslavia.
