The striking Valley of Heroes Monument commemorates the 1943 Battle of Sutjeska, when Yugoslav Partisans were surrounded by a massive Axis offensive aiming to destroy the resistance and capture Josip Broz Tito.
Despite devastating casualties, the Partisans broke through the encirclement, making the battle one of the defining moments of WWII in Yugoslavia.
