The Slinger burst onto the market a few years ago and has since forged a partnership with Dunlop after being incorporated into the larger Connexa Sports Group.

The product has been well marketed and is one of the more popular ball machines out there, thanks to its accessible price point and portability compared to some heavier machines.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀?
The Slinger Bag has a unique luggage-like design, and alongside the ball machine firing section, it has storage for around 144 tennis balls directly above it.

At the rear of the bag, there is a top loading racket compartment section that holds three rackets and then several accessory compartments on the sides to store the charger, the remote key fob, the phone holder and other bits and pieces.

The telescopic ball collector that holds 20 balls when extended is strapped to the side, and at the rear of the Slinger are two wheels with a telescopic handle for wheeling it around.

The oscillator accessory comes in a separate bag, which you can slot over the telescopic handle for carrying around.

In terms of design, it is very slick looking, and it draws plenty of attention from people; while most people have guessed it is something sport-related, nobody outside the tennis world would think it is a tennis ball machine.

𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗴
Setting up the Slinger is straightforward. First, ensure it is fully charged by plugging the charging adapter into the port and letting it run before play. It is also possible to remove the battery and charge it directly if you’d rather leave the bag in the car or in a place where there is no wall socket within reach.

Once you arrive at the court, you unzip the front bottom pocket and fasten it with the carabiner clip, so it stays fully open.
Turning on the Slinger bag is done via a rocker switch, and you then have two k***s to control the speed and the feed rate. There are four lights to indicate battery level.

There is a side pocket that you open to access the elevation k**b, which dictates the angle the ball fires out at from zero to 40 degrees. You loosen it to adjust, then tighten it when happy with the angle.

To use the oscillator, you place the bag onto the oscillator base, so the wheels are in the grooves, then connect it via the white cable, which locks on magnetically to the control panel. You can then switch it on from the remote control keyfob.

You are ready to go from there, but don’t pick up your racket and sprint to the baseline like Nadal.

At ActiveLife Tennis we recommend using the fob to switch to the machine to ‘go’ while you are standing next to it; then, you can see where the first couple of balls land.

For first-time use and warm-up, We recommend placing the machine behind the ‘T’ of the service boxes, setting the speed to just under halfway, and the angle at around 15 degrees. This provides a comfortable ball to get into the groove.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
The first impression that you will get is how easy the bag is to move around. It is easy to tilt to get onto the wheels, and you could quite easily walk a fair distance to the courts if you needed to; bringing it on public transport would also be no problem.

Even for stairs and rough surfaces like gravel it will feel truly okay and easy to traverse, it’s easy enough to lift and carry for a brief period if you need to and you also have straps included to carry it if you must.

It also fits into most car boots comfortably.

The wheels on the Slinger; they’re slimline but substantial and have a rubber feel. They run super smoothly, too, and they feel like the wheels you get on a well-made suitcase.

Slinger Bag is one complete package; with other ball machines, you need the machine, ball baskets and your rackets which can involve a couple of trips back to the car to get everything, whereas the Slinger has everything within the bag.

The maximum speed of the balls sent by a ball launcher and the possibility of adjusting this speed are important elements to take into consideration in your choice. On average, the ball launcher offers a speed between 16 and 140 km/h. Below 60 km/h, the ball will be a bit slow to give you time to place and hit the ball. Above 70km/h, the speed starts to be useful for competitive players. All of this is of course individual and depending on your level of tennis and also you fitness level. You will get tired anyway, especially if you are on the oscillator moving from side to side on the court.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗔𝗟
This criteria will allow the rhythm. Very often, higher ranked players have more consistency and more power. They deprive you of time and therefore you don’t have the rhythm to compete, because you don’t often play against players ranked much higher than you. The idea here is to shorten the ejection interval in order to hit more balls in a shorter time, to position yourself and to organize yourself technically so that you are not hindered anymore. With a ball launcher, you can get into a high rhythm and it will also train your physical condition.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
Pay attention to the different directions in which the ball launcher of your choice can send balls : on the backhand or forehand side and in a fixed or random manner.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦
Some ball launchers offer chop or lift. This option is interesting if you have trouble returning your opponents’ backhand chops, for example.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗠𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗙 𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘 𝗦𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗦
Being able to program play sequences on your ball launcher will allow you to vary the different balls sent, for example by starting with two balls on the forehand side, then a short ball then a smash, etc.

Most ball launchers have a lithium battery, which allows them to have a slower discharge, a longer life and a faster recharge than older lead batteries. Lead-acid batteries also require recharging every 2 months if you are not using your ball launcher. Some ball launchers like the MSV ones also have AC power for endless play time.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗢𝗟
A remote control that will allow you to control your ball launcher remotely will certainly be essential so that you don’t need to go to the other end of the field each time.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗬
Also, pay attention to the number of balls that your ball launcher can carry : the larger its capacity, the longer you will be able to train before refilling it. The Slinger Bag, for example, will allow you to put up to 144 balls in it, while MSV’s Playtech launchers will have a capacity of 160 balls. 144 balls is more than enough and you will be truly tired and get a great workout, even as a high-level player. When we use Slinger Bag in training sessions we use between 75-110 tennis balls, this is more than enough for most players.

𝗜 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗠𝗬 𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛𝗡𝗜𝗤𝗨𝗘
If you are looking for a ball machine to perfect a shot or to progress, you don’t need a launcher that provides high speed and many features. The Slinger Bag, which sends balls between 16 and 73 km/h, could be just what you need : it is possible on this one to put some lift and to set the ejection in random mode in order to receive balls from left to right. If you still want to use pressure balls to maintain a good feel for the game, Head Tour balls offer very good wear resistance. We would recommend to try different balls since this will be very individual for each player. Don´t buy the lowest price of tennis balls and it´s not necessary to buy the most expensive either.

𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗘:
Please note that junior foam, orange, red or green balls cannot be inserted into a tennis ball launcher because they are too soft to be ejected. Never use wet tennis balls on any ball machine.
