Message on 16 Days of Activism 2022
- Dr. Vindhya Vasini Persaud, Minister of Human Services and Social Security
Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence, and Guyana through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is determined to greatly reduce the numbers of women and girls who endure abuse and end up as fatalities because of violence. On this day, the world continues to be reminded each year of the worrisome statistic, that 1 in 3 women and girls experience physical and sexual violence.
The recent UN Women-UNODC report reveals that 81,100 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2021 and around 45,000 women and girls worldwide were killed by intimate partners or other family members. This means that, on average, more than five women or girls are killed every hour by someone in their own family. This alarming slaughter, maiming and abuse of women and girls should cause each person to acknowledge their responsibility when it comes to recognizing violence and proactively taking a stance against all forms of violence. We cannot expect to eradicate or reduce the numbers of cases of violence without a formidable, united front which confronts it in every environment, home, office, school, community and country.
Yes, the ability of any country to truly tackle domestic and gender-based violence requires the collective and consistent efforts of each citizen in reporting every case of violence and a conscience driven society which commits to the eradication of violence. We cannot run away from that fact that there must be shifts in attitudes and behaviours that have been long ingrained to ignore and dismiss blatant instances of abuse and violence which may end up as fatalities. The very core of our country โ families need to develop healthier ways to resolve conflict, address differences in relationships and assist persons within who experience violence and are desperately looking for support to retreat to a safer environment.
The Human Services Ministry has developed a comprehensive decentralized array of services geared to tackle every facet of violence. In 2021, the 914 toll-free hotline dedicated to reports of violence and abuse received 12 372 and to date, in 2022, we are close to that number before the end of the year. Over 600 of these calls were directly related to abuse and violence. This hotline links persons to our personalized support services of the Survivor Advocate, the Survival Kit and SAFE Voucher, counselling, shelters and a direct pathway to empowerment and financial independence through the WIIN program. I am cognizant that gender-related killings and other forms of violence against women and girls must be prevented through early intervention, access to survivor-centered support and protection as well as ensuring gender responsive policing and justice services. As such our efforts include working to develop a professional and responsive intervention from the Police Force has led to the development of the Cop Squad 2000 Initiative which has produced 1476 trained police officers across the country who are equipped with all the tools to engage with public and take reports on violence.
The MOU signed with the Guyana Bar Association will provide 500 persons who experienced violence and seek legal recourse with the option of free legal services through the Legal Pro Bono Program.
The recent drafting of the Family Violence Bill to replace the existent Domestic Violence Act is another step in developing a modern and progressive legislative framework to offer broader protection to persons, more responsive police action and justice.
There is ongoing work to train persons in schools, communities and other places through the special Community Advocates Network and directly by the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Unit and over 1000 persons have been trained in understanding the laws and support avenues and 100 of them have been trained to become trainers and advocates in their communities. The intention is to offer these training opportunities in all regions and all communities.
The effects of gender-based violence not only threaten the well-being and safety of those affected by gender-based violence but also impedes the overall well-being of society. Sexual, gender-based violence and domestic violence against women and girls continue to be a major challenge for Guyana and all of the activities planned over the 16 days of Activism which conclude on the December 10th address the many facets of violence with heightened emphasis on education and awareness and a strong push for persons to utilize our services to get help.
We consistently working to violence, ensure access to justice for victims and support for survivors. Among initiatives is improved data collection aimed at better understanding and addressing the
underlying causes of violence. We continue to seek support from our developmental partners, especially through the Spotlight Initiative to build our overall capacity, to collect credible data to
develop policies and action plans and to strengthen and expand our capacity to continue to address violence.
Our efforts include engaging men and boys in efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. We firmly believe that a multifaceted approach that includes measures such as encouraging the equal sharing of responsibilities in areas such as parenting and household work, public awareness campaigns, the engagement of community leaders to address discriminatory social norms and gender stereotypes as well as a robust legislative regime can bring about significant change.
As we observe yet another 16 days of activism, I encourage you to support and participate in all of our activities and initiatives including Orange Guyana, wearing orange, visiting the interactive Orange Avenue on Camp and Lamaha Street, joining our mega rally, edutainment program and picnic brunch tomorrow at the National Park from 8:00am, the virtual townhalls and stakeholder engagement on the Family Violence Bill, YOUnite, the youth event on Orange Avenue and all the others that remind us that we have work to do โฆbut to succeed in eradicating violence against women and girls, we MUST UNITE!

Another year and we are trying to put smiles on the childrenโs faces during this holiday season.
If you would like to donate toys to our toy drive what's app Rose on 592 670 6908 or call.
We at Rose for Relief wish all our donors and supporters a wonderful holiday season filled with lots of peace and happiness.

Two families looses their home in Kingston fire.
Rose for Relief tried to contact both families but was only successful in meeting with one. After speaking with 23 year old Stacy she related to the members of Rose for Relief that she along with 6 children ages four, five, seven (girls) and ages one, five and nine (boys) are now homeless after their home was completely burnt to ashes.
Stacy along with the children are now left devastated since she lost her mother earlier this month and now has lost their home.
Rose for Relief will be raising funds to assist Stacy and the children. You can do so by contacting Rosey Mohamed on +592 670 6908 or donate via PayPal or Zelle.

After speaking with fire victims, persons attached to the fire station and people within Skeldon, Corriverton (Berbice) we have found that majority of homes that were lost to fire could have been saved if the following was available:
1. Sufficient water
2. A Fire hydrant in the area
3. More than 1 fire truck
A fire truck holds an amount of 400 gallon of water which is not sufficient to put out a fire. We are calling on the relevant authorities to look into this situation and help us to prevent homelessness.
