🐖🎉 Supporting the next generation of livestock farmers!
The Agriculture & Rural Development Department, RDC Region 10, recently distributed two weaned piglets from the Department's Swine Breeding Unit to New Silvercity Secondary School as part of its ongoing commitment to agricultural education and youth development.
This initiative provides students with hands-on experience in swine production while fostering entrepreneurship, responsibility, and a greater appreciation for agriculture and livestock farming.

The Agriculture & Rural Development Department, RDC Region 10, recently hosted a training session on Common Swine Diseases, facilitated by Ms. Candace Wharton- Agriculture Officer (RDC) and Ms. Demelza Nicholas- Livestock Extension Assistant (GLDA).
The session provided farmers with practical knowledge on disease identification, prevention, and management to support healthier and more productive swine operations.

As part of Guyana’s Independence Celebrations, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development – Region 10 established an Agriculture Booth at Harmony Secondary School to promote awareness and appreciation of the agricultural sector.
The booth featured a variety of agricultural products, farming techniques, and informative displays designed to educate and engage students, teachers, and community members. The activity provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of agriculture in food security, economic development, and sustainable livelihoods while encouraging greater interest in the sector.
The Department remains committed to fostering agricultural awareness and inspiring the next generation of farmers and agricultural professionals throughout Region 10.

Department of Agriculture and Rural Development – Region 10 | School Support Programme
Supporting Swine Production at Kwakwani Secondary School
As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening school agriculture programmes across Region 10, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recently provided veterinary assistance to the swine unit at Kwakwani Secondary School following a request from the institution.
A total of ten pigs were treated with Ivermectin and Vitamin B Complex to support their health, welfare, and overall productivity. The intervention aimed to enhance animal husbandry practices while ensuring the continued success of the school’s agricultural programme.
The exercise was conducted by RDC Agricultural Officers Ms. Candance Wharton, Ms. Angelique Braithwaite, and Ms. Chelsea Chicester.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development – Region 10 recently hosted a Secondary Schools Professional Development Session on Introduction to Aquaponics.
Facilitated by Mr. Terrence Browne, Fisheries Officer attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, the session provided participants with valuable insights into aquaponics as a sustainable system that combines fish farming and crop production. Discussions focused on the principles and benefits of aquaponics, as well as strategies to support the rehabilitation and effective management of aquaponics systems within secondary schools across Region 10.
