Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha met with a group of farmers and millers from Region 2 to discuss a number of issues.
Farmers told the Minister that they were seeking better prices for their paddy in the region and needed urgent rehabilitation work to be done on several dams so that they can access their rice fields.
Minister Mustapha told the farmers that the current world market price for rice had been declining for a number of months and that the price of fuel and other inputs have been increasing.
These factors, he added, have influenced the sector in terms of prices locally.
In addition to concerns over paddy prices, Minister Mustapha also told farmers that the government will be executing a number of other projects to improve drainage and irrigation in the region.
He disclosed that funds will immediately be made available to execute rehabilitation work on a number of access dams on the Essequibo Coast.

IMPROVING THE SWINE INDUSTRY||
Today, several of Guyana’s swine farmers benefited from a donation of improved breeds to assist with the government’s overall efforts to improve the sector’s production levels.
The donation which was made by the Ministry of Agriculture’s Guyana Livestock Development Authority saw some 10 farmers benefiting from what are considered high performing breeds of pigs which are expected to produce higher quality and quantity pork once proper animal husbandry practices are followed.
The entire pilot project will see a total of 21 farmers receiving piglets for both breeding and meat production purposes during the second quarter of 2022.
During the presentation, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said given the current demand for better cuts of meat, more specifically for pork and beef, the donation is the government’s way of helping farmers to produce what is needed to tap into specialized markets locally and, in the future, regionally and internationally.
Farmers who benefited from today's donation complimented the government’s efforts to boost the sector and said they look forward to future collaborations as they work to drive the sector forward.
