GUYANA HINDU DHARMIC SABHA SAYS PHAGWAH IS A UNIFYING FESTIVAL THAT.
CELEBRATES THE TRIUMPH OF GOOD OVER EVIL

Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha extends joyous Phagwah greetings to all Guyanese.

Phagwah occurs annually in the Hindu Month of Phalgun and has a deeply spiritual dimension which reminds us to divest ourselves of all negativity and darkness within to allow the emergence of good. As Hindus attend mandirs on Phagwah Day, the messages about the story of Prahalad advise us to always stand on the side of righteousness and justice and divest ourselves of anything which impedes our spiritual connection to Bhagwan.

Phagwah is an ancient Hindu festival on our national calendar which has been embraced by Guyanese and its messages resonates with all people; the triumph of good over evil and removal of all negativities and vices while fostering equality and love. It is a unifying and inclusive festival that encourages people of all walks of life to participate and celebrate in togetherness.

This festival is aligned with Spring and celebrants smear each other’s faces with vivid hues representing nature in its glory.
Phagwah promotes the concept of “Vasudhaiv Kutumb aksham”; the world is one family. Proletariat in nature, the festival removes all barriers and differences, as covered in colour people are unrecognizable removing all differences on this day.

Also called Holi, this word comes from the Sanskrit word “hola’ meaning grains, reminding us of the festival’s linkage to agriculture and a bountiful harvest. It also precedes the Hindu New Year.

Phagwah is a beautiful festival and we must capture the essence of the celebration by fostering love, understanding, unity, harmony, steadfastness, fearlessness and righteousness as we engage in the gaiety and festivities this festival brings.

There must be nothing that brings disrespect to this beautiful festival and its celebration. As you enjoy the festival today, we urge that the land be converted into a spiritual garden from which we must imbibe positive and good vibes. There must be no primitive behavior nor any disrespect on this day, rather we must embrace each other in the spirit of friendship.

Holi Utsav will be hosted by the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha today at the EVEREST CRICKET CLUB GROUND. Gates open at 4:00pm and admission is free. Come and enjoy chowtaal, songs and dances representing the festival of Phagwah. No alcohol allowed. All are invited!

DO NOT DESECRATE THE PHAGWAH CELEBRATION, KEEP THE FESTIVAL CLEAN

As we prepare to celebrate the beautiful and unifying festival of Phagwah , this year, the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha makes a strong appeal to persons to desist from associating Phagwah or Holi with any event that involves alcohol and vulgarity.
We have made this appeal yearly for our festivals to be respected and celebrated in the right way, maintaining the love, respect and dignity that goes with its observance.
Although there is a social and festive component, there should be nothing to taint the festival which is loved and celebrated by all.
We are happy to let the wider Hindu community know that we have addressed the many reports of these events that associate Phagwah with alcohol and lewd names and vulgar content and have been working along with the Guyana Police Force to reach out to these event organizers. The Guyana Police Force has been responsive and will work to ask those persons to desist from associating Phagwah, the name or celebration with any such event.
We again ask that our festival be respected as it continues to be wonderfully celebrated by all and continues to espouse unity.
