WHAT DID JESUS MEANT WHEN HE SAID, I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE:

John 6: 35
"Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty"

"I am the Bread of Life” in John 6:35 is one of the seven “I Am” statements of Jesus. Jesus used the same phrase “I AM” in seven declarations about Himself. In all seven, He combines I AM with tremendous metaphors which express His saving relationship toward the world. All appear in the book of John.

John 6:35 says, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

Bread is considered a staple food—i.e., a basic dietary item. A person can survive a long time on only bread and water.

Bread is such a basic food item that it becomes synonymous for food in general. We even use the phrase “breaking bread together” to indicate the sharing of a meal with someone.

Bread also plays an integral part of the Jewish Passover meal. The Jews were to eat unleavened bread during the Passover feast and then for seven days following as a celebration of the exodus from Egypt. Finally, when the Jews were wandering in the desert for 40 years, God rained down “bread from heaven” to sustain the nation:

Exodus 16:4

"Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions"

All of this plays into the scene being described in John 6: 35 when Jesus used the term “bread of life.” He was trying to get away from the crowds to no avail. He had crossed the Sea of Galilee, and the crowd followed Him. After some time, Jesus inquires of Philip how they’re going to feed the crowd. Philip’s answer displays his “little faith” when he says they don’t have enough money to give each of them the smallest morsel of food. Finally, Andrew brings to Jesus a boy who had five small loaves of bread and two fish. With that amount, Jesus miraculously fed the throng with lots of food to spare.

Afterward, Jesus and His disciples cross back to the other side of Galilee. When the crowd sees that Jesus has left, they follow Him again. Jesus takes this moment to teach them a lesson. He accuses the crowd of ignoring His miraculous signs and only following Him for the “free meal.” Jesus tells them in:

John 6:27

"Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal"

In other words, they were so enthralled with the food, they were missing out on the fact that their Messiah had come. So the Jews ask Jesus for a sign that He was sent from God (as if the miraculous feeding and the walking across the water weren’t enough). They tell Jesus that God gave them manna during the desert wandering. Jesus responds by telling them that they need to ask for the true bread from heaven that gives life. When they ask Jesus for this bread, Jesus startles them by saying:

John 6: 35

"I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

Jesus by equating Himself with bread, Jesus is saying he is essential for life.

The life Jesus is referring to is not physical life, but eternal life. Jesus is trying to get the Jews’ thinking off of the physical realm and into the spiritual realm. He is contrasting what He brings as their Messiah with the bread He miraculously created the day before. That was physical bread that perishes. He is spiritual bread that brings eternal life.

And very important, Jesus is making another claim to deity. This statement is the first of the “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel. The phrase “I AM” is the covenant name of God (Yahweh, or YHWH), revealed to Moses at the burning bush:

Exodus 3:14

"God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you"

The phrase speaks of self-sufficient existence (or what theologians refer to as “aseity”), which is an attribute only God possesses. It is also a phrase the Jews who were listening would have automatically understood as a claim to deity.

Now notice the words “come” and “believe.” This is an invitation for those listening to place their faith in Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God. This invitation to come is found throughout John’s Gospel.

(1). "COME"

Coming to Jesus involves making a choice to forsake the world and follow Him.

(2). "BELIEVE"

Believing in Jesus means placing our faith in Him that He is who He says He is, that He will do what He says He will do, and that He is the only one who can.

There are the words “hunger and thirst.” Again, it must be noted that Jesus isn’t talking about alleviating physical hunger and thirst. The key is found in another statement Jesus made, back in His Sermon on the Mount in:

Matthew 5: 6

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”

When Jesus says those who come to Him will never hunger and those who believe in Him will never thirst, He is saying He will satisfy our hunger and thirst to be made righteous in the sight of God.

If there is anything the history of human religion tells us, it is that people seek to earn their way to heaven. This is such a basic human desire because God created us with eternity in mind.

The Bible says God has placed the desire for eternity in our hearts:

Ecclesiastes 3:11

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end"

The Bible also tells us that there is nothing we can do to earn our way to heaven because we’ve all sinned:

Romans 3:23

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"

And the only thing our sin earns us is death:

Romans 6:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord"

And there is no one who is righteous in himself:

Romans 3:10

"As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one"

So our dilemma is we have a desire we cannot fulfill, no matter what we do. That is where Jesus comes in. He, and He alone, can fulfill that desire in our hearts for righteousness through the Divine Transaction:

2 Corinthians 5: 21

"For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God”

When Christ died on the cross, He took the sins of mankind upon Himself and made atonement for them. When we place our faith in Him, our sins are imputed to Jesus, and His righteousness is imputed to us. Jesus satisfies our hunger and thirst for righteousness. He is our Bread of Life.

John 6: 35-36

"Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe"

JONAH: THE RUNNING PROPHET

Jonah 1: 1-2
"The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me"

Note: It is impossible to run away from God! Jonah taught he could but failed and we also think like Jonah. Judgement day is coming when we can run no more.

Contrary to what many think, the book of Jonah is not mainly about a fish. Rather, it is about the greatest missionary campaign in all the Old Testament. In the entire Bible the book of Jonah is second only to the book of Acts as a famous missionary book. It's the story of Jonah whom God selected to take His message of "repentance and reconciliation" to a pagan land (Nineveh). It won't take you long to discover that this man Jonah was reluctant to do as God said. Based on his actions, I would call Jonah "The running prophet". Notice how the direction he ran changed during the course of the book.

In chapter 1: Jonah was running away from God.

You see, Jonah was zealot, a Jewish nationalist. Nineveh was the capital of the nation of Assyria, one of the superpowers of the day and major threat to Israel's peace and prosperity. Therefore Jonah wanted to see Nineveh destroyed, not saved. He wanted more than anything else for Israel to escape the brutality of Assyria. So when God called Jonah to go, Jonah went all right but in the "opposite direction":

Jonah 1: 3

"But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went to Joppa, where found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord"

Being a prophet, Jonah should have known how difficult it is to run away from God's presence, in fact it's impossible. God followed Jonah on his way to Tarshish:

Jonah 1: 4

"Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up"

Please notice, its does not simply say that a storm arose. It says that the Lord made it happen. That's "step one" in God's divinely persuasive plan, "step two" had to do with the great fish God appointed to bring Jonah to his senses.

In chapter 2: Jonah is running to God.

Here we see the strangest prayer meeting ever held. This was one callous prophet, believe me. After slogging around inside the fish for days, he said to himself "You know, maybe I should pray about this situation" and he did and the Lord heard him. Look at Jonah's testimony:

Jonah 2: 3

"You hurled me into the deep, into the heart of the seas and the current swirled about me, all your waves and breakers swept over me"

Jonah must have had opportunity to cultivate wisdom during those long hours inside that fish, the kind of wisdom that comes from looking at life from God's point of view. Who threw him overboard? God did. It wasn't the sailor who did it.

Note: Friends, its about time you make yourself right with God through His Son Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for you on the cross of Calvary. Go on your knees and talk with God, He is alway listening!

In chapter 3: Jonah was running with God.

After the amphibious landing describe in:

Jonah 2: 10

"And the Lord commanded the fish and it vomited Jonah onto dry land"

Jonah never stopped running until he got to Nineveh. He bore the scar of three days and three nights in the belly of that fish. When Jonah reached the city of Nineveh, the people sat up and paid attention to his message. He never stopped preaching until he had spoken his message on every street corner and this was his message:

Jonah 3: 4

"On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned"

Then the greatest revival in Biblical history broke out. About 600,000 people repented and turned to the Lord in worship. Not bad for an evangelistic crusade that lasted three or four days. That's the real miracle of this book.

Note: One hundred years later, God destroyed that city, do you know why? It was because that generation of about 600,000 that turned to God did not teach the generation after them about the Lord!

In chapter 4: Jonah was running up against God.

Jonah 4: 1

"But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry"

Jonah had spoken a message of doom and destruction to the Ninevites, which was exactly the kind of treatment he hoped the city would receive:

Jonah 3: 4

"On the first day, Jonah started into to city. He proclaimed: Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned"

But the promised destruction did not happen which send Jonah into a tailspin of anger and depression. He explained it to God this way:

Jonah 4: 2

"He prayed to the Lord, O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in Love, a God who relents from sending calamity"

Through the object lesson of the vine, God captured Jonah's attention. Then God addressed Jonah with a question and a declaration that went something like this:

"You are telling me, Jonah that I should not have compassion on this great city of people? Should you not have had compassion toward a people who could have died without having experience God's love and mercy, you, Jonah have more compassion towards a vine that sprang up in a day and withered in a day?"

Jonah's vision was so limited that he fell in love with a dumb plant and missed the ministry he could have had, had he "run with God throughout his life.

Question: What are we in love with that causes us to miss all the opportunities that God send our way to share to Good News of Christ our Lord with the lost? Let us not take the way of Jonah, who was more concern about something so insignificant than seeing souls won for Christ our Lord.
