Rotary Club of Garden City - Georgetown Guyana
The members of The Rotary Club of Garden City are firsthand witnesses to the impacts of climate change and will focus it service projects on the Environment.
Chartered on the 17th day of September 2020, this EPIC Team (Enthusiastic People Influencing Change) of Business Professional former Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors aims to create a new club experience for our members that is fun, flexible, family oriented with fulfilling service projects focused on the Environment. The Caribbean has seen first-hand the impacts of climate change, and Guyana
Say hello to our remarkable Service Projects Director Cindy as we say goodbye to Membership & New Club Development month and be sure to stay tuned to our page throughout the year for a glimpse at our many projects.
Diversity—through the lenses of race, ethnicity, ability, gender, sexual orientation, neurodiversity, and beyond—can help to strengthen organizations. Quite simply, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is used to describe three values that many organizations today strive to embody to help meet the needs of people from all walks of life.
As a cause-based club focused on the Environment we were honoured to welcome Ladonna to the club and now to the board. Her love and enthusiasm for the environment are infectious and she has already taught us so much.
Did you know that on the Rotary Calendar August is Membership and New Club Development Month⁉️
In honour of this, we are highlighting a few of our members who are already making waves in the new roles they undertook this year.
First up; our fearless leader President Melissa.
"Social support is not the same as merely being in the presence of others. The critical issue is reciprocity: being truly heard and seen by the people around us, feeling that we are held in someone else’s mind and heart. For our physiology to calm down, heal, and grow we need a visceral feeling of safety. No doctor can write a prescription for friendship and love: These are complex and hard-earned capacities. You don’t need a history of trauma to feel self-conscious and even panicked at a party with strangers — but trauma can turn the whole world into a gathering of aliens."

"Belonging is a psychological lever that has broad consequences, writes Walton. Our interests, motivation, health and happiness are inextricably tied to the feeling that we belong to a greater community that may share common interests and aspirations.
Isolation, loneliness and low social status can harm a person’s subjective sense of well-being, as well as his or her intellectual achievement, immune function and health. Research shows that even a single instance of exclusion can undermine well-being, IQ test performance and self-control."

Our club is committed to treating everyone with dignity and respect, allowing everyone's voice to be heard, and providing equitable opportunities for fellowship, service and leadership. DEI Friday!
Happy Emancipation Day‼️
Let us make the most of it by celebrating the freedom that we are all born with and that we all deserve to have.
Today is World Mangrove Day. Mangroves contribute substantially to sea defense in Guyana by damping wave action and reducing wave energy, trapping sediments, and stabilizing shoreline substrates while playing an important role in carbon sequestration. Human well-being in the coastal tropics is closely linked to the fate of mangrove and coastal wetlands. In Guyana, almost 90% of the population lives on the coast and are subject to the benefits that healthy mangroves provide. These include improved coastal defenses, health, tourism and fisheries food security. In June 2020, Rotary made protecting the environment its newest area of focus and in November 2021, then Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta announced that mangrove restoration will be a focus of Rotary’s environmental work.

On June 23, 2024 our Rotary Club held its 4th Handover ceremony where Melissa De Santos became the President of our club. It was an event filled with a few jokes and fellowship. Our sister clubs showed their support by the Presidents elect and secretaries elect from Georgetown Central, Stabroek and Demerara being present at our ceremony. Our members showed their support and the Rotarians who could not make the event sent a family member to represent them. Our club is a true family where we all appreciate each other. It is the family we never knew we needed. We have made life long friendships and as our new Service Projects Director said our work is very important since we live in a selfish world where people look out only for themselves and not for each other. We are fully committed to improving our communities by our work. We are a group of 40 Enthusiastic People Influencing Change. Our District Governor's main focus is Peace which is very important in our world today. We aim to spread the message of peace and create magic in the world for this new Rotary Year.
Happy Rotary New Year!! 🎉 🎇
Come along with us as we seek to unleash “THE MAGIC OF ROTARY.”
This year, Rotary International (RI) President Stephanie Urchick has called on us members to create magic by recognizing and amplifying Rotary’s power to save lives. This magic she says, will not be created by waving wands and saying funny words but through the completion of projects, donation of dollars and the addition of new members.
RCGCGY takes this opportunity to extend best wishes to all Rotarians and clubs for this new year and beyond.

Together, we can make a lasting impact! We've also included two photos from our shade house at the Cheshire Home. We replanted these in May. Look at them grow!!

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible moms out there! Your love, strength, and dedication inspire us every day. From our Rotary family to yours, we celebrate the bond between mothers and children that enriches our lives. Wishing you a day filled with love and cherished moments.
On Saturday, May 4, the members of the Rotary Club of Garden City Georgetown got together for repairs and rehabilitation works to our Green Thrive Shade House & Mini Farm at the Cheshire Home in collaboration with Massy. Sincere thank you to our committed members and the enthusiastic staff of Massy for braving the weather and coming out. As a result of our efforts, the occupants of the Cheshire Home will continue to have good, organic fruits and vegetables grown in their own backyard to enjoy.
Late Post! Eight of our club members and one partner in service attended the District Conference held in St. Vincent in April. We met our old friends and made some new ones. We were inspired by a Rotary International Representative as well as the works done by our fellow Rotarians. However, it was not all business. We were hosted by the Prime Minister Mr. Ralph Gonsalves after the opening ceremony, partied the night away at the shades of blue event held at the La Vue Hotel after our first day and ended with a closing ceremony at the Mill. As an added event we were treated to a catamaran tour to Bequia which is one of the Grenadines. Conference was truly a wonderful experience. We are one Rotary Family working to improve the lives of others.
