Stakeholders are demanding stronger protection of children living in mining-affected communities, particularly within Newmont Ghana’s Ahafo South fenceline areas. They warned that the exposure to environmental pollution and unsafe mining practices was placing child health and development at serious risk.

The concerns were raised at a stakeholder engagement on “Mining-Induced Barriers to the Wellbeing of Communities and Children Affected by Mining”, organised by Wacam with funding support from DKA Austria.

A multi-stakeholder forum held in Sunyani by Wacam and the Centre for Public Interest Law with support from Oxfam in Ghana's Fair finance programme, has recommended sweeping reforms to Ghana's mining laws and compensation framework following the presentation of a damning report detailing widespread environmental and human rights abuses linked to Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's operations.

Forum in Sunyani Reports Widespread Abuses Linked to Newmont Operations A multi-stakeholder forum held in Sunyani in the Ahafo Region under the Oxfam in Ghana Fair Finance Project has heard a detailed report outlining widespread environmental and human rights abuses linked to Newmont Ghana Gold Limited rsquo;s operations in its Ahafo North and Akyem concessions .

With support from DKA Austria, Wacam engaged faith-based leaders and community stakeholders on the role of religious institutions in promoting child protection, responsible mining and community wellbeing.

The discussions highlighted the impact of mining on children’s education, health, livelihoods and safety, and reaffirmed the need for stronger community action to protect children from the negative effects of mining.
