Ghana News - Insurance scheme launched for fishermen

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in partnership with Star Microinsurance Services Limited have launched the Fishermen Life Insurance Scheme (FLIS) for fishermen across the country.

Star Microinsurance is a specialized Microinsurance intermediary for Star Life/Star Assurance Company Limited.

FLIS can be seen as a financial inclusion scheme intended for artisanal fishermen who seem to have been excluded from the formal financial services due to their income levels, levels of risk, nature of their business or level of financial literacy. The dangers associated with the activities of the fishermen (marine and inland fishing) require the need for affordable and accessible Microinsurance insurance solutions for them.

The Fishermen Life Insurance Scheme (FLIS) is an innovative insurance product that seeks to provide insurance cover on the life of the fishermen and their fishing gears. The first pilot phase is currently on going in the Greater Accra, Western and Central region in selected landing beaches such as; Half Assini, Axim, Elmina, Shama, Ankaful, Apam, James Town and Aplabanya.

The second pilot phase will cover Volta, Eastern, Brong Ahafo and Northern regions in selected landing beaches including; Woe and Adina, Dzemeni, Kpando, Abotoase, Nkwanta, Dambai, Bupe, Adawso, Akateng and Ekye Amanfrom. This project when completed will provide an insurance coverage for over 200,000 fishermen across the country.

Star Microinsurance Services Limited in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development on 1st December, 2015 launched the Fishermen Life Insurance Scheme (FLIS). The product protects fishermen against perils of the sea. The policy covers natural or accidental death of fishermen as well as their fishing gears.

At the launch, the minister of fisheries Hon. Sherry Ayittey highlighted some of the challenges that fishermen go through at sea and encouraged all fishermen to take the opportunity to insure themselves and their families. The product would be piloted within some selected landing beaches for three months starting from January 2016.

Star Microinsurance Services Limited has donated sachets of water worth thousands of Ghana Cedi to hundreds of people at the Odawna Market in Accra.

A rare act of corporate kindness, company officials say it falls in line with their social responsibility drive of touching lives. The donation is a support measure for the many people who were in one way or the other affected by last week’s floods in Accra.

Head of Marketing, Star Microinsurance Services Limited, Solomon Larbey, says the exercise is tied to its forward-looking social responsibility theme of reaching out to their core clientele base.

“This is our way of reaching out to the people here. Some of them were affected by the recent floods, and we saw the need to commiserate with them. This is our small way of saying we feel their pain.”

A GHS 31,144.84 claim was presented to twenty- two Traders who fell victim of the March 28th fire that gutted the Tudu Station market. The traders who were loan beneficiaries of Advans Ghana Savings Ltd had their loans paid off by insurance. A claim was paid to the family of a deceased borrower of Dwadifo Adanfo. This is in line with the Loan Protection collaboration between Star Microinsurance and Dwadifo Adanfo.
