Danionella cerebrum, discovered in shallow streams in Myanmar and described scientifically only in 2021, is barely 12 millimeters long, among the smallest vertebrates ever documented, yet males produce sounds exceeding 140 decibels measured at one body length, comparable to a jet engine during takeoff heard from 100 meters away. Researchers at Charité Berlin published the mechanism in PNAS in 2024 after using high-speed video, micro-CT scanning, and genetic profiling to solve the puzzle. The fish has a specialized drumming muscle that slowly pulls a rib into tension against a piece of cartilage. When released, the cartilage snaps back and strikes the swim bladder, which acts as a resonating drum, at an acceleration exceeding 2,000 times the force of gravity, among the fastest vertebrate skeletal movements ever recorded. This challenges a long-standing assumption in biomechanics that vertebrate muscle movement is capped at a maximum speed around 250 hertz, because the fish's drumming muscle is fatigue-resistant and fires far beyond that limit through the same spring-loading principle used by snapping shrimp claws, just evolved independently in a completely different lineage. The fish likely uses these calls to communicate in muddy turbid water where vision is nearly useless.
