GAMBIA DELEGATION VISITS MINISTRY OF HEALTH

The Minister for Health, Hon Kwaku Agyeman-Manu has received a delegation from the Gambia Health Service led by its Minister for Health, Hon. Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh.

The delegation is the country to understudy Ghana’s national health policy, the health care delivery system, and pathways to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as the Gambia prepares to establish a strong health system.

Hon. Agyeman-Manu in a welcome statement said, his Ministry has delegated the responsibilities of service delivery, purchasing and regulation to 23 Autonomous Agencies established by law who have independent boards and councils overseeing their work.

These Agencies have also somehow decentralized their activities to the regional and district levels of the country.

*Health Minister inaugurates two governing boards*

The Minister for Health, Hon Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, yesterday inaugurated governing boards of two agencies under his Ministry.

They were the governing boards of Cape Coast Teaching Hospital (CCTH), and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).

The CCTH board is chaired by Nana Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim, while Dr Sammy Kwame Ohene is the Chairman of the FDA board.

The US Government has presented the first of four oxygen plants to the Government of Ghana.

Making the presentation at the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre (GIDC) at Kwabenya in the Ga East Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, the US Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Stephanie S. Sullivan said, her country is making several significant steps to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, save lives, and continue to strengthen Ghana's health systems.

She said the US government would also provide clinical and non-clinical technical assistance associated with the donation of the oxygen equipment to prepare health staff and biomedical engineers to ensure the long term use and maintenance of the equipment.

Dr. Nicholas Adjabu, head of Biomedical Engineering Unit of the Ministry, on behalf of the Minister for Health, expressed his gratitude to the US government for the donation. “We hope this is not going to be the end of the partnership”, he said.
He also extended the Ministry’s appreciation to the hardworking staff of the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre (GIDC).

In addition to this donation, the US government will subsequently inaugurate three additional plants at Cape Coast Municipal Hospital, Kumasi South and Tamale West hospitals.

The Government of Ghana, this morning received 1,229,620 doses of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccines from the United States of America through COVAX. The Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Mahama Asei Seini, who received the vaccines on behalf of the government, described the donation as best practice of cooperation between the two nations.

He thanked the US Government, the US Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Stephanie Sullivan, UNICEF and all those who contributed to the receipt of the donation. H.E. Stephanie Sullivan said the US has delivered over 125 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines to more than 80 countries including 26 million doses in Sub-Saharan Africa.

GOVERNMENT DONATES TO CONJOINED TWINS

The Chief of Staff, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, on behalf of President Akuffo-Addo and the State, has presented a cheque of GHC14.39 million to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital towards the surgery to separate the conjoined twins.

The presentation is in fulfillment of a pledge the President made in July during a visit to the family of the twins and Doctors who will perform the surgery.

The Chief of Staff was hopeful that the release of the money would now make way for the purchase of equipment to enable the doctors to perform the surgery on time to save the lives of the conjoined twins.

The German Government, through Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), has donated 45 ventilators, 5,000 pulse oximeters, and consumables valued at about €373,000 to the Government of Ghana as part of their efforts to strengthen the health system with its partner countries.

In addition to the donated items, key medical personnel from the beneficiary hospitals in Ghana will undergo a three-day training on the use of the ventilators with support from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and the School of Anaesthesia.

UK GOVERNMENT DONATES ASTRAZENECA TO GHANA

The Government of Ghana today received 249,600 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the Government of the United Kingdom for the continuation of our Covid-19 national vaccination programme.
The donation is part of a broader pledge by the UK Prime Minister, Mr. Boris Johnson at the G7 meeting in June, in which the UK government will share 100 million jabs with the rest of the world, of which 80% will go through COVAX.
Addressing the media at the Kotoka International Airport, the Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Tina Mensah said the donation comes at a time when the government of Ghana has dedicated a lot of resources through the efforts of the Minister for health to manage the Covid-19 pandemic, at the same time addressing the general health needs of the population.
She said the donation is a further demonstration of the partnership between the UK government and the rest of the world, of which Ghana is part, and commended the UK Government, UNICEF, WHO and other stakeholders for their continuous support.

The Minister for Health, Hon Kwaku Agyeman-Manu yesterday joined New Africa Foundation, an NGO, and some doctors of the Greater Accra Hospital to present a leased five-bedroom house to the family of the conjoined twins.

This will enable the parents of the conjoined twins to move from their home in Nsawam to Accra for easy access to the hospital. The leased is for two years.

The government of Ghana today received over 177,600 the single-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccines procured under the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) initiative.

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu has handed over ultra-low temperature vaccine freezers, fridges and cold boxes to the Ghana Health Service in Accra.

The Ministry of Health, led by the sector Minister, Hon. Kwaku Agyeman-Manu initiated the process when it became evident that the nation needed to deploy other vaccines that require ultra-low temperature storage that ranges from -83 degree Celsius to +8 degree Celsius.

These storage facilities include 58 ultra-low temperature vaccine freezers, 50 normal vaccine fridges, 3000 ice pack freezers and 300 cold boxes.
