Everyone has a will, whether you write one or not. If you don’t, you have what I call a ‘statutory will,’ imposed on you by law. Some call it ‘intestate succession.’

In Ghana, this is your statutory will:

One house goes to the spouse(s) and all the children to share.

The remainder of all your assets is then divided into 16 and shared as follows:

Spouse 3/16
Children 9/16
Parents 1/8
Customary law 1/8

If we can’t physically divide it, we will sell it and share the money. Then it begins to get complicated. What if there’s no surviving parent? What if there’s no child or spouse? What if there’s more than one wife? What if you have a few ‘pikin abolos’?

Ah, as for the customary law 1/8 (which increases to 1/4 and even 1/2 under certain circumstances) deɛ the traditional family chops it proper-proper, especially that drunken cousin that you don’t respect. He will spend your money brutal and insult you while doing it.

So sit there and don’t write your own will. Don’t worry. Ghana has you covered. Read up!

𝟑 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐔𝐩 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐚𝐰

Doesn’t it just irk you when those fancy-pants lawyers are talking about new-age law, and making it seem sexy too? Don’t you fire mental darts at them when they easily switch between jargon and drivel (I’m jealous) while listeners seem to eat out of their hands?

Of course, you can study some rocket-science post-grad programme to specialise in Fintech law, equine law or cryptography law. Or you can buy and read the 10 best books you can get on the subject. But I’d bet you any money (ok two dollars and 10 cents) that the three methods below will switch on the rocket boosters in your levelling up, and make you fancy-pants in no time.

1. 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙨

Ok, I admit that this works better for areas which are not novel in themselves, but are just new to you. But it works, by Jove!

What’s a legal opinion, after all? It’s a statement that “on this question, in these circumstances, knowing the courts in this country, and their past decisions, and their pattern of thinking, I predict that the courts will take this position”.

I can think of few methods with more rocket fuel in their tanks than reading the cases the courts have decided in an area of law for the journey of levelling up. So read them, and brief them.

If the area is so virgin that there are no reported cases in your country, read the best articles you can find. And read cases from other countries.

2. 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙧 (𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚)

Read that again. It didn’t say “attend”. It said “participate”. Read around the topic. Get there early. Sit in front. Switch off your phone. Listen with rapt attention. Ask questions. Approach the speakers afterwards. Interact with other participants. Don’t be shy to ask questions. You’re learning. You’re levelling up.

3. 𝙎𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮, 𝙉𝙤𝙩 𝙎𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙮 - 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙖 𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙠

Ok, I played you false just a bit. You can’t avoid reading books. Ok, maybe one; not 10. But it must be a good one. Perhaps the leading book. The leading, simple book. I always go for books which explain concepts in simple terms. Not books written with labyrinthine laboriousness. (Forgive. I couldn’t resist that to make the point.) Make notes. Ask questions to yourself. Flip back and read for the answers. Summarise it in writing. Tell your summary to a friend. You will level up.

Honestly, too many people don't read books on the side about their craft.

There are many other methods. Maybe you can share one in the comments. These are for levelling up from zero. Obviously, to rise to ‘Grandmaster’ level, you need to do more. More degrees? Check. Learning on the job? Check. Experience? Check. But this was a post about levelling up with cheetah chutzpah. The rest is up to you. Now let me see if I can go use my own suggestions to learn Fintech law.

DEPP V HEARD ( DEFAMATION TRIAL)

Depp and Heard are both actors who entered a romantic relationship around late 2011 or early 2012 and married in February 2015.[4] Heard filed for divorce in May 2016 and obtained a temporary restraining order, alleging that Depp had been physically abusive to her throughout their relationship.[5] The couple finalized their divorce in January 2017, with Heard receiving a $7 million settlement that she pledged to donate to charity.[6] In December 2018, Heard published an op-ed in The Washington Post that did not name Depp, under a title stating, "I spoke up against sexual violence", and with text stating, "two years ago, I became a public figure representing domestic abuse", and "I had the rare vantage point of seeing, in real time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse".[7] In March 2019, Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard in Virginia, blaming the op-ed both for damaging his reputation and career and for causing him to sustain extensive financial losses.[2] In August 2020, Heard filed a counterclaim relating[c] to three statements that Depp's lawyer Adam Waldman had provided to The Daily Mail in April 2020. Separately, Depp filed Depp v News Group Newspapers Ltd in June 2018 against the publishers of British tabloid The Sun for describing him as a "wife be**er". That trial took place in July 2020 at the High Court in London, with Heard testifying as a witness on behalf of the defense.[8] In November 2020, the High Court rejected Depp's claims of libel, concluding that "the great majority of alleged assaults of Ms Heard by Mr Depp have been proved to the civil standard".[9][10]
