European Union in Ghana

The Republic of Ghana and Europe are bound together by common history, interlocking cultures and shared objectives. In 1957, Ghana became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence.

That same year saw the formation of the European Union. The European Union in Ghana is a Diplomatic Mission.

📌📌#CocoaTalks

The first multistakeholder roundtable on cocoa took place today! The dialogue brought together stakeholders involved in the cocoa sector to share experiences and lessons learnt on sustainable sustainability of cocoa.

The objective of this national dialogue is to explore means of promoting sustainable cocoa production by enhancing the three dimensions of sustainability for cocoa production:
1️⃣️ to ensure a living income for cocoa farmers
2️⃣ to foster progress in the elimination of child labour and child trafficking in cocoa supply chains
3️⃣ to enhance the protection and restoration of forests in cocoa-producing regions.

The EU believes that a commonly agreed traceability system is essential to guarantee that produced & imported cocoa is socially & environmentally sustainable.

General information

EU is Ghana's first trading partner. Under the interim Economic Partnership Agreement Europe borders are open without duties nor quotas and it is our firm objective to keep the doors open as it is a formidable development instrument for the economic diversification of the country, it is now time to implement it! EU-Ghana trade for 2012 was valued at € 6.9 Billion. This is a traditionally strong partnership. During recent years, the European market has been the major export destination, absorbing each year more than 30% of Ghanaian exports. Ghana’s exports consist of mostly agricultural products such as cocoa, banana and fish as well as gold and recently crude oil. The Ghana – EU partnership has developed deeper and stronger over the years. Since 1975 the European Union has provided more than 3 billion Ghana Cedis in terms of development aid to Ghana. In recent years the EU Delegation has disbursed around 100 million Euros per year on average in terms of development assistance in Ghana, and 2013, if everything goes well, should even largely exceed this average and should be the record year ever.
