We are back. Thanks to everyone for your help and care! Special thanks to Igor Khanaev for he is not just tolerated us for almost a month, but made us to absorbe the maximum amount of information. A little drop of Baikal was brought with us to Moscow as hundreds of gigabytes of photo and video and audio records, and we still wake up at 7 am because of the time difference.

Most of crustaceans use strategy of reproduction which may be called pe******ia: their adult males choose a young immature female, cling to it with special hooks (clearly seen at the photo), and so the new couple is inseparable, while the female is not old enough, and will not be ready for reproduction. And then the "old man" fertilizes it and leaves forever ... And then it goes in search of a new, young female.

Baikal sponge is nor a plant neither an alga, as you might think, judging by its appearance, but it is one of the first multicellular animals on Earth - their ancestors appeared about 70 million years ago. They are silicic, composed of tiny glass needles, while we humans are organic creatures. They acquire their green color through symbiotic algae, but in a difficult time sponge can eat its organic comrades, and then it becomes white. The main function performed by the Baikal sponge is to filter water, purifying it of organic particles, including introduced by humans.
