💥Lockdown Weight Gain?

I have heard so many commenting on how much weight they have put on during this lockdown time. This is easy to remedy!

For many this is emotional eating. For others overeating/drinking or just eating the wrong foods and snacks has become a recent habit. The fridge and kitchen cupboards always seem to be beckoning, inviting you to sample their wares. Resistance has become futile in many cases.

Let me help you address this issue and get you back into those jeans or dresses comfortably ready for the summer sunshine.

Together we can put together a personal therapy, eating and simple exercise program that will suit you.
💥NOT bootcamp!!💥

Loosing the lockdown weight doesn't need to be difficult. My clinic is now open and I am ready to help you put that confident smile back on your face 🙂

We would love to hear what your favourite activities are to keep fit!

Alex Marek, Osteopath at SOC shares his top 3 tips to help prevent Postural Imbalance that can sometimes lead to those exercise induced injuries :

1.) Don’t go from zero to hero!. Pre or post-exercise, spend time warming up your soft tissues and joints. A 15-/20min fast walk before your run/gym session is a good start.

2.) Find excuses to spend a little time away from your desk throughout the day -, make that cuppa tea, walk up and down the stairs, run jog a marathon in your garden (ok, perhaps not a marathon just yet!!!)

3.) It may be more beneficial to combine a 30- min fast walk with 2 x 10-mins of light exercise a couple of times a day, rather than a 50/60min blast after work.

We hope you are all okay and haven't got blown away on this very, windy, Friday Morning! 💨

Did you know that Alex Beeston, registered osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre is also an experienced windsurfer? (See photo)

Due to the physically demanding nature of windsurfing, Alex advises you to prepare the body to reduce the chance of injury and make the most of your time on the water, with this in mind he has designed a set of key 'windsurf specific' exercises from an osteopathic perspective, which can be done from home with minimal equipment. The primary focus of windsurfing training should be on the posterior chain (hamstrings, the gluteus maximus, erector spinae muscle group, trapezius, and posterior deltoids ) and core muscles. Training the ability to recruit the muscles of the back, glutes and hamstrings in unison, whilst maintaining a strong core will generate greater force output and a stronger sailing posture!

These exercises optimise efficient posterior oblique sling recruitment and anti-rotation core stability. Please remember that these exercises are a guide only and it is recommended that you consult an experienced professional to ensure that they are safe for you to do, that you use the best technique and do the correct number of repetitions as well as use the correct resistance for your body etc. TRX suspension systems or similar can be very useful for these exercises.

• single leg row
• single arm row
• lunge Pallof press
• side plank
• Russian twist

If you have any queries or are experiencing any joint/muscle pain or discomfort (from windsurfing or anything else!), please don’t hesitate to contact our caring and experienced team at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre. 01273 567654

We all know that Daily Exercise is good for our health but knowing where to get started can seem like quite a daunting task if it is new to you.
Try and pick something that you enjoy and find fun as you are far more likely to stick with it!
Remember when starting something new, that slow and steady wins the race and that feeling a little sore or uncomfortable after exercising (particularly in the beginning) is perfectly normal. If you have any concerns or questions about getting started you could always speak to you osteopath at your next appointment for some tips.

Here are some tips that will help you to care for your back (Credit: Institute of Osteopathy)
🔹Keeping active can help with most back pain and will keep backs healthy. Prolonged bed rest is usually not good for backs and delays recovery
🔹When lifting and carrying always keep the item close to the body. Make sure to bend the knees and let the legs do the work. Try not to twist the back – turn with your feet
🔹Take regular exercise (aim for 30 minutes every day). People who are physically fit generally experience less back pain and recover faster if they do get it
🔹Pace yourself when undertaking any physical activity, especially when it is intensive or you are unaccustomed to it e.g. spring cleaning or tidying the garden after the winter
🔹Adjust your car seats, use a rolled-up towel to support the lower back and take regular breaks on long journeys
🔹Mattresses and sofas wear out over time and can cause back pain. If you have one that is over seven years old it may be time to get a new one.
