Not all care companies are the same. I saw the difference at a funeral this week.

This week I led a funeral for a gentleman with no family. For years he struggled to trust carers, until Personal Freedom started supporting him four years ago.

His PAs became his family. Holidays, weekly events, and real dignity in how they treated him. When I met with his carer to plan the service, I was humbled listening to how far they went for their clients.

I didn’t even realise I was speaking to the director until the end. He and his wife came from a caring background and were tired of seeing the system fail people, so they built something better.

Watching his PAs carry him into the chapel was one of the most moving things I’ve seen.

That grief was real because the love was real.

If you are thinking of having a direct cremation (unattended service) please speak to your local funeral home who can arrange it rather that the companies using glamourised adverts on tv.

In recent years, the rise of direct cremations as an alternative to traditional attended services has left many families feeling they haven’t had the opportunity to fully process this final rite of passage we’ve long associated with saying goodbye to a loved one.

More recently, I’ve been asked to write and lead memorial services following direct cremations. The latest took place in woodland, an especially fitting setting for the loved one we were remembering. There were tributes, music, camping chairs and, as the ashes were scattered, family came forward to place flowers. It was beautiful, poignant, and deeply personal. Fitting for both the person who had died and for those left behind.

Choosing the right way to say goodbye is so important in helping people process grief and navigate the emotions that come with loss.

I’m sharing these photographs and this experience with the family’s permission to raise awareness of the options available when a loved one has a direct cremation.

While television adverts often glamourise this option, and rising costs add to the appeal, many families are left struggling without this moment of collective farewell. After all, funerals are as much for the living as for the dead.

It’s also important to remember that permission is needed from the local council or landowner before scattering cremated ashes as they can have an environmental impact in certain settings.
