When Casey Hayzelden set out to open her own salon, she had one clear ambition: to create a space where clients can truly switch off. After six months of renovations, two attempts and one flood, the doors of The Nail Shed () finally opened. ๐
A relatively new face in the nail industry, Casey began her professional training in 2024 and qualified in 2025. After honing her skills in busy salons, she realised she wanted to create her own space. โI decided to open a salon because I wanted to create a calm, welcoming and safe space for everyone,โ Casey explains, adding: โI had a clear vision of creating a cosy, private environment that feels different from a traditional high street salon.โ
What began as a humble garden shed was gradually transformed into the space Casey had always imagined โ though the journey was far from smooth. A particularly dramatic setback arrived during an intense storm. โI walked into a full waterfall feature in the salon,โ she recalls. โWe had to fully gut it and start again.โ Despite the setbacks, Casey says that stepping into the finished studio for the first time made every challenging moment worthwhile.
From the outset, The Nail Shed was built on a philosophy of inclusivity โ in particular, a commitment to welcoming clients who might find conventional salon environments challenging. โI wanted to create an environment that is supportive for neurodivergent clients, as well as anyone who may feel anxious or overstimulated in traditional salon settings,โ Casey shares.

"One thing I think the beauty industry struggles with is relying entirely on clients for marketing," she writes. "When you first start out, your clients are your content: photos of fresh nails, lash transformations, before and afters, appointment selfies, reposts and reviews.
"This works for a while because people need to see your work. However, after time, many beauty businesses stop building a brand and start relying solely on appointment photos to carry their online presence: a huge mistake, because surely there is more to their businesses than client stories and photos?"

Marie-Louise Coster Nail Artist's latest column explores the difference between cost and value for nail and beauty pros. "Earlier this year, I spent hours trying to secure Harry Styles tickets. Seats were disappearing in front of my eyes, but I finally got two good tickets at a cost of almost ยฃ600," she writes.
"The whole experience got me thinking about the nail and beauty industry, and the difference between cost and value. Yes, the tickets cost me ยฃ600, but their value is far greater than ยฃ600.
"You must create a unique environment and build a relationship with each client that is of great value to them. I could throw a tennis ball in any direction from my salon and I would hit another person offering the same as me at a lesser price. My clients walk past them to get to me. To them, I am worth the cost because of my value."
