Does any one have any videos of our entry, baby shark from yesterday please.

This is the Official page of Wem Carnival which takes place on the first Saturday of September each year. Parades at 13.30 & 19.45 which is illuminated.

The Carnival was first held in 1911, used as a way in which to commemorate the Coronation of King George V. That procession consisted of the members of Wem TT Band, the local Scout troupe, members of the U.D.C. masters and pupils of the near-by Grammar School, British School and National School, the Friendly Societies (in their full regalia, including their banners) and the areas parishioners and townsfolk in fancy dress. This was followed by sports events and a dance on the Castle Field, and entertainment at the Cricket Pavilion. The evening consisted of a procession, which was by torchlight, and a Cycle Carnival. From that day to the present, interest in the Carnival itself has meandered, some years fully focused on it others it was neglected completely. Through wartime and the 60s its popularity sunk for obvious reasons, but was revised fruitfully in 1978 - and has continued every year subsequently, with the original format of the 1911 Carnival still in use to this day.

Operating as usual

[08/28/20]   Have you noticed the wonderful odd article displays in the shop windows along the High Street? If you want to have a go, call in at Seasons where you can pick up an entry form for £1 and find out which shops are participating. Thanks again to Helen and the team at Seasons for organising and to all the shops taking part.

Help raise £2000 to be split between the NHS and allow wem CC to purchase a defibrillator to be located at the club for use by the local community.

Wem Cricket Club are raising money for the NHS and to purchase a defibrillator to be located at the club. The defibrillator is not just for the benefit of club members but is to be made available for use by the general public. Wem railway crossing is notorious for problems causing long delays, we believe there is no defibrillator located to the east of the railway crossing this despite there being a number of large housing estates and a large industrial estate. Locating externally at a central point such as the cricket club would make this life saving equipment accessible to all, and reduce the risk of loss of life in the event of the crossing being down.
To raise the money club members and as many members of the local community we can attract will be walking, running, cycling a total of 4000 miles. This is the equivalent of travelling to Mumbai. We have chosen Mumbai as that is the home city of this years club professional cricketer who should have joined us in April. We are pleased to say he has agreed to take part in our fundraiser.

We hope you will all support us by registering to take part on our club Strava page and then along with family and friends donating to our just giving page. I really hope the people of Wem will get behind our fundraising initiative which will benefit the whole community. If anyone needs more info please contact Gina Ellis or Chloë Green

[05/13/20]   Wem Carnival Committee has now had the opportunity to review the latest guidance from the Government and held an Extraordinary Committee Meeting via social media platforms to discuss the feasibility of holding this year’s event.

After careful review, and with the heaviest of hearts, it was decided that this year’s event will need to be cancelled.

Our overriding concern has always been the health and well being of our parade participants, performers, traders and public who support us and make Wem Carnival the fantastic event that it is.

We know that this will be a huge disappointment for the community, and we desperately wanted to be able to put on the event to give the town something to look forward to, but feel our decision is the most socially responsible thing we can do to ensure public safety and well being.

As soon as we are able to, we will start planning for next year’s event which will be held on Saturday 4th September 2021 and hope you will support us in our decision.

It goes without saying, we wish you the best of health and please stay safe.

Wem Carnival Committee

[05/12/20]   The Committee were very upset to hear the sad news today of the passing of Arthur Foster, one of the founder members of the revived Wem Carnival and our honorary President.
We are also saddened to hear of the passing our committee helper Marie.
Our sincere condolences go to both families.

Looking forward to seeing what our (almost) resident pipe band have in store for us tonight

Hello everyone!

We hope that you are all keeping safe and well during these difficult times. You might have noticed we haven't posted anything for a while, this is because, as you would expect, almost all of our engagements have been cancelled.

As a band, we have been thinking of something we could do to celebrate all the hard work our key workers and NHS staff are doing every hour of every day.

Lets not forget to mention that today, as you will all know, marks the 100th birthday for Captain Tom Moore, who, when i last checked has raised over £31million for the NHS which also spurred us on to thinking of something extra special to celebrate this amazing milestone!

SO, after it finally being given the go ahead, watch this space for something extra special at 8pm TONIGHT!

From us all at OSPB - KEEP SAFE - SEE YOU SOON!

[03/27/20]   At the moment Wem Carnival is still scheduled to take place on Saturday 5th September and the committee are continuing to prepare for the big day.
This is of course all subject to change depending on the guidelines given by the government.
To help the Committee make Wem Carnival even bigger, we need the support of the community by entering floats and fancy dress.
Why not take advantage of having to be at home and start making costumes etc. You can build it into your home schooling as part of arts and craft classes or sewing classes.
We will also need support with raising funds as we have already been forced to cancel our bingo evening, which was scheduled to take place this evening, and our annual duck race is in jeopardy as many of our supporters are in enforced 12 week shielding or isolating and will be unable to get out to buy the ducks.
If you feel you can help in supporting the carnival, please get in touch, although we can't physically have any meetings at the moment there's still a lot going on behind the scenes.

Here’s something very exciting!! This is Dans Canons who are our main attraction this year on the Gala Field! You’ll be able to fire your own canon! How far will it go??
Dan appeared last year with his Medieval Museum and you may of seen him as the Knight in the parade! He is very much looking to bringing his Canons this year to entertain you all 😁

A successful day out for the cannons recently at Short Wood Primary School in Wellington where a very popular end of term family event was held to encourage focus on engineering as a potential path for students. Naturally I was only too pleased to help them! All being well there may be cannon related science there in the future. It was a busy three hour event at the school with constant queues for the seven cannons. We collected the balls from the field 2.5 times which suggests the cannons were fired between 1500 to 2000 times! Many thanks to the supervisors helping the cannons operate - well done to Jon, Oli, Louise and other members of staff who made me very welcome. See you all again!

[08/04/19]   **STALLHOLDERS**
We are very pleased that our Craft Marquee is now full - However we do have some spaces outside on the field - if you would like a pitch please get in touch with Beth Lear at [email protected] with what you sell and for more information. :)

[07/22/19]   **WE NEED HELP**
We need your help to Marshall the parades on the big day - please get in touch to offer your services! Without Marshall’s we don’t have parades! You don’t have to become a committee member (although that would be great if you did), you can simply just help to Marshall and we’ll do the rest 😁👍🏾 please share around your networks thanks

[07/19/19]   Lots of lovely gifts available tonight, tomorrow and Sunday. Why not pop along and say hello and maybe start your Christmas shopping early and help support the Carnival in the process!
