Attachment theory in schools

Attachment research and the neuroscience of attachment is the basis for Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples, an empirically validated process of resolving relationship distress. Human beings have an innate need to feel attached and comforted by significant others, and where this is is not happening in the home and family environment for whatever reason, then nursery and primary school are the first places that an infant and child can experience safe, secure attachment. That's why I love this article by local Professor Elizabeth Harlow from the University of Chester.
Attachment, ‘the strong, affectionate tie we have with special people in our lives; understood in terms of relationship’

headteacher-update.com The implications of attachment theory are becoming more and more relevant to the work of schools. Professor Elizabeth Harlow looks at the research and signposts a range of resources, training and support

ACEs in the shadows

‘ACEs in the shadows’ is not simply a book about the ACEs study and the ACEs movement. It is a personal account of A.Survivor’s lived experience, a narrative that brings into sharp focus the detrimental impact of highly Toxic Stress and the damaging consequences of Adverse Childhood Experiences across the life course. The truths about ACEs in terms of behavioural, physical as well as mental health implications are poignantly described in the author’s inimitable style of ‘Tell it how it is’:- Descriptions of abuse, neglect and family dysfunction that are gut wrenching; accounts of determination to triumph over adversity that are heartrending and heart warming in equal measure; an enlightening read for anyone interested in becoming truly ACE Aware and Trauma Informed.

I feel honoured to have been asked and have willingly contributed to the chapter ‘What can you do about ACEs?’ The long-term public health implications of ACEs concern us all.
