Rachel the ‘write’ to speak by Sandra Capelin
I was recently asked to write the book, ‘Rachel the ‘write’ to speak,’ to help raise awareness of Developmental Language Disorders (DLD). Even though DLD is a more common neurological disorder than autism it is not so widely recognised. Furthermore, despite Professor Courtenay Norbury’s research in 2014 showing that seven children in every primary classroom was suffering from DLD, only half were actually diagnosed.
Reviews describe this book as being easy to read but with a powerful message told through a mother’s eye and an inspiration to anyone facing similar issues. It has a forward written by Professor Dorothy Bishop, tells how Rachel was born with a Language Disorder that went undiagnosed until she was sixteen years old, struggled through mainstream education with little or no help from professionals yet managed to succeed against all odds. It is therefore essential reading for anyone wishing to work with children and young people in early years, education, health and social care, either voluntarily or professionally, in order to appreciate the difficulties that these children and young people face on a daily basis, both socially and academically.
Although it initially tells of events from the 1970s - 1990s, it still gives significant insight into the difficulties these children face today with their hidden impairments. Granting there is now more awareness of such problems, the book is still relevant today as families continue to fight to get their children diagnosed and it becomes increasingly more difficult to access professional help due to government cut backs.
A greater awareness of these hidden disorders is desperately needed.
‘Rachel the ‘write’ to speak ’is available from Amazon for £5 and all good bookshops
My son has started this week in year 10 (we have been isolating following holiday) I am just wondering if there is an app or something that will tell me what homework he has etc as he says he doesn't have a planner and it is all online - but doesn't know where! (Typical teenage boy!) He has a paper timetable in his pocket for this week, does it change every week?
Feel a bit out in the blue, as a teacher I know how high schools work but not sure how UTC operates.
Have to say though he seems very happy with his first 2 days.
Thank you
