Side sleeping is beneficial for reducing acid reflux and can alleviate lower back pain, though it may lead to shoulder or hip discomfort with prolonged pressure (Sleep Council, 2023) šŸŒ™. On the other hand, stomach sleeping can cause neck strain and worsen spinal misalignment, which may lead to chronic neck pain (British Chiropractic Association, 2023) šŸ„.

However, there is no perfect sleeping position. Each has its positives and negatives, and the best choice depends on your unique health needs and comfort. 🌟 While one position may benefit you in one way, it could cause discomfort or aggravate another condition, so it’s all about finding what works for you! šŸ’­

It’s always interesting as a physiotherapist when we assess a patient and they say they’ve been stretching but the pain stays the same…often it’s because stretching isn’t what they should be doing and it’s actually strengthening…stretching actually could be making you worse šŸ™ƒ

Did you know the worst thing you can do with arthritis is try to avoid the pain? Now I’m not saying go out and make things worse, but avoiding moving is also making you worse! Most people get a diagnosis of arthritis and then start to avoid any movement to prevent the pain, however the best thing you can do is build strength in the right areas. Building strength, improving mobility leads to improved function which can slow down the process of deterioration. An arthritis diagnosis is not your sign to stop moving, it’s your sign to improve in these areas before it’s too late!
