I'm looking for experiences to include in my next book. Please read this carefully as you do need to follow the instructions.

The book will be about reframing the way parents feel about breastfeeding not working, and the title is "You Did Not Fail." It's going to be short, to the point and designed purely to help parents heal. With this in mind, I am looking for your stories of breastfeeding not working to put in the book, and I will then talk a little about how the experience you had wasn't down to your failings, but more likely lack of good information, support that was too slow or not good enough, pressure from people around you, or simply - living in a world that doesn't support lactation. The book is NOT about bashing HCPs. In fact, I'll also be looking at how professionals WANT to do more but are tied by funding and red tape.

Here's what I need:

A short summary of your breastfeeding experience (Around 300 - 500 words ish) SPECIFICALLY covering one (or more) of the following topics:

- Slow weight gain
- Jaundice
- Tongue tie
- Oral disfunction
- Pain
- Frequent feeding
- Lack of sleep
- Oversupply
- Low supply
- Unsupportive family or friends

Please include in your story the support you had, the things you were told, and how this ultimately lead to you stopping breastfeeding, or combination feeding against your initial preference.

Example:

"My baby was born after a short but intense induction. I didn't get to have the Golden Hour as I had a PPH and we were separated. When he did latch it was painful. Two midwives said his latch looked great, and the tongue tie provider said there was no tie, but it still really hurt to feed him.

On the 5th day, a midwife suggested we give him formula that night so I could get some rest, which we did. The next morning he was fussy at the breast and wouldn't stay on, so I gave more formula. Someone from the feeding team came out and said he had bottle preference and showed us how to uses a cup to feed him, and taught me how to express. Cup feeding was slow and messy though and I couldn't get much milk out with the pump. When he was weighed on day 10 he was still 8% below birth weight so I decided to stop breastfeeding."

If you want to participate:

EMAIL ME ONLY PLEASE [email protected] We will NOT be responding to comments or DMs.

State in your email that you give me permission to use your words in a book. I NEED your written consent to publish your words!

Let me know if I can use your first name or a pseudonym

If I use your story, I would like to send you a free, signed copy of The Breastfeeding Workbook and some other small goodies as a thank you. Despite perceptions, authors don't make a ton of money - in the year since it was published Mixed Up has earned me around £1000 even though it does fairly well in the charts. This means I can't pay you, but I do want to acknowledge and thank you.

Please note that we often get A LOT of responses to requests like this so Lexi and I may not be able to get back to everyone, although we will do our best.

As a precautionary measure, government agencies are advising anyone currently pregnant to make sure that any smoked fish – such as smoked salmon or trout - has been thoroughly cooked before eating.

This is due to a Listeria infection linked to smoked fish, and this contamination can be particularly unsafe for pregnant women.

How important is your birth space? well the saying goes that what got the baby in there will get the baby out! whilst that could be interpreted in many different ways, its fair to say that at conception there was a reasonable amount of oxytocin flowing, and this hormone has an important role in labour and birth. it flows more freely when you're comfortable and you're with people you know.

what can you incorporate into your birth space to encourage the oxytocin?

Our thoughts affect our body, whether they’re conscious thoughts or otherwise.

The body reacts to fear and danger in the same way- fight or flight- despite fear not actually existing- it’s something we create in our minds.

Our bodies produce hormones that get labour going but also to stall it if there is danger- something that was all very well 10,000 years ago but it today’s society, it’s not needed quite so much.

So how can we use this to our advantage in labour and birth?

We can try to reframe our thoughts when they pop up, recognise that thoughts aren’t facts and try not to linger for too long on negative thoughts, or of thoughts about ‘things going wrong’ - whilst being kind to yourself about having these thoughts, they are common worries and very normal!

Having our environment play a part so that we feel safe, relaxed and unobserved. The aim is to allow the oxytocin to flow, uninhibited by adrenaline which slows everything down when we’re fearful.

We’re programmed to lean towards negativity as a survival mechanism but we can choose how we respond to our thoughts and to not let them influence our births.

The topic of feeding babies is rife with controversy and confusion: breast or bottle or a bit of both? The fact is, whatever your preferences or however your journey plays out, one thing is certain - you're going to have to feed this baby!

Whilst there is masses of information out there about the pros and cons of breastfeeding, what most mothers tell me they want are simple facts about getting things off to a good start, how to navigate common problems and how to most safely use formula if that is what they need or desire.
Research shows that the majority of mothers aspire to breastfeed and around 90% of UK women say they stopped breastfeeding before they were ready. So there are clearly some challenges that our society places in our way.
So information and support really are key!
What questions and concerns do you have about feeding?
If you've had a baby before, what helped and hindered you?
What are the social attitudes in British society around feeding babies?
What are your rights - do you know?

How we Bloomed...

A long time ago in a living room far, far away… some midwives (and a few mischievous babies) sat down together and thought ‘how can we share what we are passionate and skilled about all to do with pregnancy, birth and parenting?’. After many cups of tea (and some milk), some homemade soup and plenty of distractions, Parents in Bloom was born! Here are some key themes we all thought were important to base our business on:

...We want to take a holistic view of families’ journey into parenting, whether that be focussing on the whole family rather than just the woman who is pregnant, being concerned with the psychological and emotional aspects rather than just the physical, and supporting families through pregnancy, birth and postnatally. We don’t want to limit ourselves to one aspect of our midwifery training (such as only providing a ‘hypnobirthing’ style course just focussed on the birth) as we believe they are all intertwined.

...we don’t want to ‘teach’ how to give birth/be parents/look after babies. We want to provide information, support and advice based on evidence and experience to enable you to create your own journey into parenthood feeling confident and knowledgeable.
