Mindfulness Part One

Mindfulness is about paying attention, in a particular way, on purpose at any given moment.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by things?

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by things? Are you finding things over whelming? Sometimes our thoughts run away with us, and as a result we feel like our brain is going to explode.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by things? 22/11/2020

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by things?

It can happen for many different reasons. We may be stressed in work or in our personal life, and feel we can’t handle it anymore, we may feel that the demands on us are just too much. So, what can we do about it? We could delegate and ask people to take things on to reduce our to do list, or we could say ‘no’ when we are asked to take more on, but if it was that easy, we probably wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place....

Anxiety Continued…

As we discussed in the previous blog, anxiety is the bodies way of responding to being in danger. The adrenaline rushes into our bloodstream to enable us to run away or fight and as we covered previously sometimes this happens when the danger is perceived rather than in reality. People that are anxious are constantly looking for danger, and are hyper alert to what is going on around them, which leads to thoughts like ‘something bad is going to happen’ or ‘I am not going to be able to cope’...

I've heard and seen a lot of people talking about other people making "non-essential" trips ...

What if that guy buying paint knows he must keep busy because idle hands in the past have caused him to relapse and pick up that case of beer? So he's using this time to do home improvements, something that keeps his mind busy while feeling a sense of accomplishment, trying to avoid painful triggers while possibly alone?

Or maybe that lady buying bags of soil and seeds, has struggled with depression and su***de? Maybe planting and watching something beautiful grow during this time of darkness is essential to her and she is holding on to what little hope she might still have.

Or the mother walking for hours in the park because her son cannot deal with being cooped up and may harm her or himself in his confusion.

Or that father who has to make a trip to three different shops because he’s buying groceries for his coeliac parents, his family and his vegetarian neighbour. Their food preferences mean he has to keep looking for the bread, the quorn, the flour.

Or the teen who is buying paper and paints and paint brushes and stickers and glue so she can sit with her younger sibling while her mum goes to work at the hospital.

It is impossible to know just by looking at a situation from our own individual lens on life what someone is truly going through or where their mental health is at.

Everyone handles chaos and healing through different means, and I know we are all on edge but it is still important to be respectful of others!

The Guest House Poem

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
