What are the benefits of companionship care for the elderly?

Loneliness is a growing concern amongst the elderly. According to the NHS “older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation and it can have a serious effect on health.” It affects individuals in various ways.

Companionship care is exactly what it says on the tin – carers that provide companionship to help tackle loneliness. Individuals don’t necessarily need to be living with a condition to receive care. If they are living alone and simply need a bit of company, this can be delivered via companionship care.

The Romford branch took on a lovely new customer, Colin, who was recently diagnosed with dementia. Colin's daughters wanted him to have companionship, so they contacted Helping Hands to keep Colin company!

Colin hit it off instantly with the lovely carers and has been going out nearly every day! So far, Colin has been to parks to feed the ducks, farms, a trip to Hylands House, the cinema to watch Elvis, and they're planning a beach day next!

Colin has loved his time with the Romford carers so much that his daughters increased his visits to 5 days per week! Swipe to read the wonderful note from Colin's daughters...

Helping Hands Professional Care Workers' Week 2022

For this year’s Professional Care Workers’ Week, we asked the wonderful people of Helping Hands to share three reasons why they love working in care.

We were blown away by the response and all the fantastic reasons shared with us.

Check out some of the reasons in this video!

Today marks the beginning of Professional Care Workers’ Week, an annual event that highlights social care and raises awareness of what it means to be part of the workforce.

Here at Helping Hands, we want to celebrate the wonderful people who work in social care, and more specifically, the compassionate individuals who make Helping Hands and deliver the highest quality care to our customers. Later in the week, we’ll be sharing more about what drives the people of Helping Hands to empower our customers every day.

Let us know in the comments why you love working in care!

On Her Majesty’s 21st birthday, she vowed to devote her entire life to the service of her country. The Queen not only served the UK, but became a symbol of strength and resilience through many turbulent times during her 70 years of reign.

Rest in peace, Queen Elizabeth II.

Doreen, a Helping Hands customer, was reunited with her sister, Bett, after years of being apart, thanks to the wonderful team from the Harlow branch that made it happen.

When COVID-19 happened, the care home that Bett lives in had stopped allowing visitors, Doreen also lives very far from the care home and cannot drive or leave her home alone. Doreen had worried for years if her sister was okay and being taken care of; therefore, she mentioned to her carers that she wanted to find Bett. The team contacted her nephew as he was her next of kin, and he gave them all the details of Bett's home so they could make contact; as soon as they made contact, they booked a date for the sisters to be reunited!

Both sisters were thrilled to see each other again finally, and they didn't stop talking or holding hands the whole time as if they had never been apart in the first place.

Thanks to the Harlow branch, the sisters are happily reunited and can now stay in touch, no longer needing to worry about each other.

This lovely Helping Hands customer, Elise, has been cared for by the fantastic team at St Alban's for six years during her time at university in the area.

Although the team won't be providing care for her anymore, it's nice to see a room full of smiles when Elise visited the branch to say goodbye and thank the team!

Emily Barr, a carer from the Helping Hands Maidstone branch, recently helped customer Allison enjoy her nephew's wedding virtually. She couldn't be there herself as the wedding was in France and the venue wasn't suitable for people with mobility needs! However, this didn't stop the pair from having a wonderful time.

Emily went above and beyond and bought Allison a corsage, a flower hair clip, a Victoria sponge cake and a champagne flute to help make sure Allison felt extra special for the day. Emily even put her nephew and his new wife's initials on her face mask to help mark the occasion!

Emily helped ensure that even though Allison couldn't be with her family in France for the wedding, she still had a memorable day and felt close to her family.

In July, the Helping Hands Bishops Stortford branch hosted a social media competition for their followers to vote on who they think has the cutest pet from the Helping Hands team! 🐶🐱

Whichever pet gets the most votes will win its owner a £30 voucher of their choosing. The team expressed they wanted to host the competition because who doesn't love pets?! Their pets mean so much to them that they wanted to show them off to the world.

From Carer to Care and Training Practitioner!

Isabel joined Helping Hands over ten years ago as a live-in carer, moving far away from her home in Portugal! During these ten years, Isabel has made the most of everything Helping Hands has to offer in terms of development; she has undertaken various NVQs and is set out to complete her Level 4 next! As well as qualifications, Isabel has been a Carer Mentor helping other carers achieve their own goals too.

Isabel's journey with us at Helping Hands is an excellent example of how you can develop your career and skills with us!

Joy is a client from the Basildon branch, and she has been receiving care from Helping Hands for the last couple of years. Joy's mum, Clare, has been so happy with the care Joy has received that she spent some time writing one of the most beautiful Moments of Kindness nominations we've ever seen!

After the nomination was received, Jodie arranged for the team to get together at the branch to celebrate with Joy and the carers received their awards for their fantastic work with Joy.

"Being able to support Joy to such a standard would not have been possible without the staff's kindness and hard work, and I thank them sincerely for all they have done." - said Jodie Williams, Branch Care Manager.
