Did you know there are 5 ways to promoting wellbeing? Here's how! ⬇️

💫 Be Active- Exercise is essential for promoting wellbeing and can reduce depression and anxiety amoung all groups! It doesn't have to be an intense workout, a simple walk can provide the same benefit

💫 Connect- Social relationships play a key role in mental health and can act as a buffer against poor mental health. Try to connect by chatting with someone new, check in on a friend or ask someone how their weekend was

💫Give- Helping to participate in social or community events can be super beneficial. Committing an act of kindness per week has been found to help with promoting wellbeing  and happiness

💫Learn- Continuing to learn can not only help with self-esteem but also encourages social interaction. You can learn something new by signing up for a course, learn a new language, doing crosswords or even learning something new about a friend

💫Take Notice- Becoming self-aware and aware of the present can help promote wellbeing and enjoy things in the moment. Take Notice by visiting a new place for lunch, take notice of how your friends/colleagues are, buy a new plant, practice mindfulness e.g. breathing techniques or yoga

Reaching out can sometimes be quite overwhelming, especially when you're struggling- it may feel like it's the biggest task in the world🌍

Here's how you can ask someone "How Are You", without having to ask that phrase, to show you care about someone's wellbeing 💚

What's the main way to end stigma surrounding mental health? Talking!🗣 Mental health is just as important as physical health and it's okay not to be okay! 💖Life can be so overwhelming sometimes, but support is available so you're never on this journey alone! 🤗

Whether you send a meme, ask to go for coffee☕, go grab a bite to eat🍝 or simply go for a walk👣-one small gesture can mean the world to someone struggling. If you know someone struggling, offer a non judgmental👂🏼and let them know you are there for them. 🧡

International Stress Awareness Week - yes another week and another awareness post but an important one 👏

On average in Britain a person spends 3,500 days at work! That's alot of days possibly feeling stressed and overwhelmed with a high workload, difficulties with work colleagues or just not enjoying your job.

We have a work stress programme that takes you through different techniques that can help you. From time management techniques, assertiveness and building resilience to name a few.

It's a one on one online course with our psychological wellbeing practitioners and we have seen great results 👍

Smoking and Mental health

Depression: Nicotine stimulates the release of the chemical dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is involved in triggering positive feelings. It is often found to be low in people with depression, who may then use cigarettes as a way of temporarily increasing their dopamine supply. However, smoking encourages the brain to switch off its own mechanism for making dopamine so in the long term the supply decreases, which in turn prompts people to smoke more.

Stress: Some people smoke as ‘self-medication’ to ease feelings of stress. However, research has shown that smoking actually increases anxiety and tension. Nicotine creates an immediate sense of relaxation, so people smoke in the belief it reduces stress and anxiety. This feeling is temporary and soon gives way to withdrawal symptoms and increased cravings. Smoking reduces the withdrawal symptoms, but doesn’t reduce anxiety or deal with the reasons someone may feel that way.

If you need help with reducing or stopping smoking there are a number of options - google Stoptober for find out more :)

Many of us find it harder to get going in the mornings when it's dark and the days become shorter 💤

You might find this happens every year and experience a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder.

But for most people it only takes a few changes to help improve how you are feeling. We can introduce different techniques to you to help you get going again in the mornings and feel that spring in your step again 💜

One of our PWPs was sent this message yesterday and as a team we all rejoiced in how lovely it was 🥰

We really encourage feedback, whether that is good or constructive. It helps us to develop our skills but also to know what we do well. This was a lovely reminder that people value our support.

We know that when we talk about mental health it's not just the individual that's involved. Many factors influence mental health. From the environment we are in, the circumstances and the people around us.

That's why it's so important when we do our assessments we take into account all the factors that might be contributing to someone's poor mental health/wellbeing.

At the end of our assessments we then try our best to signpost individuals to services that will help with those factors. Almost like different pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, if we start to piece them back together we can start to create a better mental health - not just for the individual but those around them too. Because if we help one person, one community, it then broadens to the next 💜

**this list is not exhaustive
**therapy is one piece of the puzzle 💜

"We all struggle with how we're feeling sometimes and it's normal to have ups and downs. This year might have felt a little more down than up. But it's the little things that have got us through it.

Saying today is a little thing we can do to make a BIG difference to young people's mental health. Because a little yellow goes a long way" -Young Minds Website
