CRADLING PHONE CAN CAUSE 'MINI-STROKE'
People who cradle the telephone between their head and shoulder could be putting themselves at risk of a "mini-stroke", leading to temporary loss of vision and speech problems.
Scientists say a 43-year old psychiatrist in France spent an hour on the telephone talking to a patient, cradling the receiver between his left ear and shoulder so he could keep his hands free.
Shortly afterwards he experienced a temporary blindness in his left eye, together with a ringing in his left ear and a difficulty in speaking.
An angiogram of the patient's brain showed he had ruptured the carotid artery, a vital blood vessel supplying the brain, eyes and other parts of the head.
The psychiatrist had no predisposition to arterial disease, but a CT scan showed a bony structure was directly in contact with his internal carotid artery.
This was his styloid process, a slender, pointed bone which runs from both sides of the skull under the ears and behind the jaw.
Although everyone has two, the man's was unusually long, and was the cause of the rupture.
In this case, the psychiatrist's symptoms disappeared within a few hours.
He was prescribed anti-coagulants for three months to prevent his blood from clotting.
Dr Mathieu Zuber, a neurologist at Sainte-Anne Hospital in Paris, who reported the case, said long styroid processes could be a more common cause of tears, or dissections, in the walls of the carotid artery than previously thought.
He said around 20% of strokes in young adults were caused by dissections.
Dr Zuber said: "Fortunately, this patient had only a transient ischaemic attack, or a brief interruption in blood flow to the brain that resolved in less than 24 hours.
"But this case shows us that everyday activities with a prolonged distortion of the neck, such as holding the phone between your ear and shoulder, can have unpredictable consequences for some people.
"Unfortunately, there is no simple procedure to identify people with long styroid processes. There haven't been any studies to determine how common these are, but they could be occurring more frequently than was generally thought."
The psychiatrist has had no more symptoms, but now avoids holding the telephone between his ear and shoulder for long periods at a time.
The study was reported in the November issue of Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology

Popping & Griding in the neck? Research suggests massage can help. Read Below 👇 under 50 years of age maybe due to posture.
🔈 POPPING AND GRINDING SOUND FROM THE NECK
Crepitus is a medical term used for a popping or grinding sound that sometimes comes from various parts of the body especially the foot and the neck. This grinding sound is caused due to rubbing of two bones against each other. If this grinding sound is heard frequently from the joints then it is a sign of arthritis.
When this grinding, popping or cracking sound is heard from the neck then it is called as Neck Crepitus. This is quite a common phenomenon and is a sign that the person has arthritis. Arthritis of the neck is a medical condition in which there is wearing out of the bones of the neck making them stiff and resulting in pain and popping of the joints.
Neck Crepitus is usually seen in older adults and is a rare phenomenon in youngsters. Neck Crepitus is not a medical condition and is just a symptom of an underlying condition thus treatment is aimed at the underlying cause of Neck Crepitus.
There can be numerous causes for Neck Crepitus or grinding sound from neck. If an individual experiences occasional popping of the neck then it is not a cause for concern as it is a natural thing. Such type of crepitus does not pose any threat to the joints.
The problem starts when Neck Crepitus is associated with pain and restricts movement of the neck which may suggest some underlying issues with the cervical spine. The most common cause for Neck Crepitus or the grinding sound from neck is osteoarthritis of the cervical spine. Osteoarthritis is a medical condition in which the cartilage which acts as cushion between the vertebrae is worn out due to age and stress and strain of everyday use. Hence Neck Crepitus is usually seen in people above the age of 50. Neck Crepitus is normally audible when the individual moves the neck. The patient may also experience pain and have restricted motion of the neck. The neck also becomes stiff.
Treating Neck Crepitus depends on the cause of it. If the crepitus in the neck or the grinding sound from neck is caused due to arthritis then treatment of arthritis is done but the concerning fact is the restricted range of motion along with pain and stiffness of neck. In case if the patient experiences weakness or other neurologic symptoms in the upper extremities then it might suggest potentially more serious condition in the cervical spine.
If Neck Crepitus is caused due to forceful motion of the neck while lifting something up or due to sudden motion of the neck then it is not a cause of concern and it does not require any sort of treatment.
In case of pain with Neck Crepitus, gentle massage of the neck is recommended which facilitates neck motion and also decreases tension in the neck muscles.Sometimes a cervical collar or a brace is also quite effective in controlling the symptoms caused by Neck Crepitus or getting rid of grinding sound from neck.

🔊 FROZEN SHOULDER - CAN MASSAGE AND EXERCISE HELP?
Frozen shoulder is a condition where an individual will experience pain and stiffness in the shoulder and is not able to lift the arm over the head. Frozen shoulder causes stiffness and restricted range of movement in the shoulder. This condition is medically known as "adhesive capsulitis." However, the adhesive capsulitis is a specific condition where there is a slow onset of stiffness and pain in one shoulder due to inflammation and tightening of the joint capsule. Usually the terms frozen shoulder and adhesive capsulitis are used alternately.
Clinical presentation is typically in three overlapping
🔁 Phase 1 – lasting 2 months to 9 months. Painful
phase, with progressive and increasing pain on
movement. Pain tends to be constant and diagnosis
in the early stages before movement is lost can be
🔁 Phase 2 – lasting 4 months to 12 months. Stiffening
or freezing, where there is gradual reduction of pain
but stiffness persists with considerable restriction in
range of motion. Pain pattern changes from constant
to end range pain of reduced intensity.
🔁 Phase 3 – lasting 12 months to 42 months.
Resolution or thawing phase, where there is
improvement in range of motion with resolution of stiffness. End range pain may persist until full
In most of the cases adhesive capsulitis resolves on its own over a period of a year to year-and-a-half. Treatment for adhesive capsulitis basically focuses on alleviating pain and trying to preserve as much range of motion as possible in the affected shoulder.
Stretching exercises are usually the cornerstone of treating frozen shoulder. Here are just a few.
1. Cross-body arm stretch
2. Pendulum stretch
3. Arm circles
4. Towel stretch
Massage therapy is very beneficial in treating frozen shoulder as it increases the blood circulation to the injured region and also reduces the formation of scar tissue. Regular massage should be done to reduce the muscle stiffness. The pain and stiffness usually gets relieved after several massage treatments.
There are various combinations of techniques done by a professional massage therapist, which provide relief from shoulder pain and help in the recovery stage.
▪️DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE
One of the common techniques used to treat frozen shoulder is deep-tissue massage. In this technique, the massage therapist applies constant pressure to the muscles in order to release the scar tissue or adhesions, which may be causing the shoulder pain.
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of deep-tissue massage, which involves deep pressure on certain regions of the body. These are called acupressure points and helps in controlling the energy flow ("Ki" in Japanese) across the body and thus results in decrease in pain. Deep-tissue massage techniques should not be done in case of acute shoulder pain, swelling or inflammation, as it may aggravate the condition.
▪️TRIGGER POINT THERAPY
Trigger point therapy is another massage technique, which benefits the frozen shoulder. In this technique, a steady pressure is applied on certain targeted points within the muscles. This helps in relieving the muscle spasms.
Heat therapy is also very helpful in treating the frozen shoulder. It can be applied before or after a massage. Heat therapy can be also done for trigger point massage for frozen shoulder. It helps in relaxing the muscles and decreasing pain. Mild heat can be applied for multiple times daily using pads, which are heated an hour before application.

Why not try a 1hr Hot Stone Massage? This massage technique has many benefits and has been around for thousands of years… originating in China 2000 years ago!
In addition to deep relaxation benefits, there are many other benefits to having a hot stone massage. They include:
1. Pain relief
Hot stone massage has specifically been associated with symptom relief in people with a variety of conditions, such as fibromyalgia and other autoimmune disorders.
Several studies have been researches, including on fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid arthritis. Trusted reviews have linked moderate massage techniques with lessening pain, and improving range of motion.
2. Stress relief
Massage is an effective method for stress relief. Several studies have shown that massage reduces stress and anxiety and improves cardiovascular health.
3. Increased joint flexibility
Muscle tension can make it difficult and more painful to move the joints. Massage helps to relax muscles, which makes it easier and more comfortable for someone to move.
People with certain joint disorders may benefit particularly from hot stone massage.
4. Decreased muscle spasms and tension
Reducing the inflammation and tension in the skeletal muscles eases both muscle spasms and pain.
5. Better sleep
Increased relaxation hormones.

A 2 year study was conducted to examine the effect of baby massage on attachment between mothers and their newborns.
This study was carried out from June 2008 to February 2010 in a quasi-experimental design. All mothers were assessed on the first and the last days of the 38-day study period. In the experimental group, the babies received a 15-minute massage session with their parent everyday during the 38 days.
The post test mean values of the experimental group mothers were significantly higher than those of control group. There was a significant difference between groups.
The results of the study have shown that baby massage is effective in increasing the mother–infant attachment.
