Sweet Chestnut

I am the heart within the shell.
Porcupine-like is my spell,
As I am broken, then released,
Casting my treasure, holding ceased.
In some ways like the human heart;
Defence-like from my very start
and growing larger into hurt,
I tumble to the forest dirt,
To grow into a chestnut tree -
Rich barked and winding endlessly.
Or food for creatures, sustenance,
Fulfilled within the endless dance.
