Hidden Batteries
⚠️Never bin batteries⚠️
Loose batteries and batteries hidden in our electricals can cause fires in bin lorries and recycling centres.
How exactly do these fires start?
1️⃣ If binned, the battery or electrical is emptied into the bin lorry with your household rubbish or recycling
2️⃣ The lorry's powerful 'compacting blade' compresses the rubbish together in the back of the vehicle so that it can fit more in
3️⃣ If the battery gets crushed or damaged in this process, air and water can react together with the chemicals and batteries begin to spark which can start a fire!
Battery fires are particularly dangerous as the lithium in them releases its own oxygen. This intensifies the fire and makes it more difficult to extinguish.
So remember, never bin batteries or electricals. Always recycle batteries separately from your household waste and recycling.

1200 Fires
⚠️ Don’t let your old batteries go up in smoke ⚠️
Never throw loose batteries or electricals containing hidden batteries in the bin. Otherwise they can get crushed in bin lorries and at recycling centres, and spark serious and dangerous fires.
Last year, there were over 1,200 battery fires across the UK🔥 and the problem isgetting worse. These fires are endangering lives, having a significant impact on local communities and causing air pollution spikes. Read the latest research by@recycleyourelectricals_

Don’t let your battery cause the next fire. Always recycle batteries and electricals separately from your household rubbish and recycling at a designated drop-off point. Use @recycleyourelectricals_ locator to find your local battery recycling point: https://orlo.uk/jA92v
National Fire Chief Council Battery Fire
⚠️Your batteries and electricals could cause a fire⚠️
When we throw hidden or loose batteries in with our general rubbish or recycling, they can get crushed or punctured in the bin lorries. This releases chemicals which come into contact with the air, and can start a serious and dangerous fire.

Great Crested Newt
🦎 The 2024 Great Crested Newt survey season was off to a flying start this week here in Flintshire: over 60 great crested newts were counted including palmates, smooth newts, and this male! 👇
🦎❤️🦎 This is an important time of the year for all three of our native newts with breeding often taking place in the spring months!
🤔 Did you know that Great Crested Newts are the largest species of newts we have in the UK and our rarest?
❗ Due to a large decline in range and abundance, they are strictly protected by law which makes it an offence to kill, injure, capture or disturb them; damage or destroy their habitat; and to possess, sell or trade them. This law refers to all great crested newt life stages, including eggs.
👨💼👩💼 Throughout April, our Access and Natural Environment team will be conducting evening surveys to establish the presence of newts and their likely population size currently in our pond and wetland habitats!
