Having a sum of money pay out over and above clearing the mortgage, following the death of a partner, can the difference between staying in the family home and not being able to afford to.

Income Protection.
No matter what you are doing, you’ve probably spent a lot of money in the run up to Christmas, whether you’ve been supper sensible over a number of months or jammed it all into December’s pay packet, your income is bound to have taken a battering.
It probably a good time to think about what would happen if you were unable to work through illness, how would the bills get paid, how would your lifestyle remain, how would you keep your family in the family home?
Some solutions could be:
Using savings you have built up, asking family to help out, perhaps you will even receive sick pay from your employer for a while.
These can be great in the short term, but if you are off work for longer, perhaps the 1 in 2 people who are likely to need treatment for cancer, there is a great need to plan for this risk.
Solution is money.
To provide that money at the time when you need it, I would recommend an insurance policy called Income Protection. In return for a monthly premium, Income Protection will pay out either for a couple of years, until you are well enough to return to work or until your chosen end date maybe retirement or end of the mtg term.
It is my go-to gold star product, and the building block for most of my advice. I encourage my clients to protect the golden goose that lays the golden eggs.

Protecting your home.
Whether it’s you on your own, or you and your family, once you’ve bought a house which then becomes your home, staying in your home becomes a priority.
What could happen to risk your home? Some straight talking here, a serious illness like cancer or a death.
Being very ill over a period on time can impact on the ability to repay a mortgage, the death of a partner can greatly affect the affordability of the household and have devastating consequences.
A solution to this is to put an insurance policy in place at the outset, a policy that pays a sum of money equal to the outstanding mortgage amount, in the event of diagnosis of a serious illness or death. This allows the mortgage to be repaid. As I’ve said before, money doesn’t bring happiness and it won’t help deal with the emotional side of serious illness or the loss of a loved one, but it does give choices that may not have been there before. In this example, it removes the financial burden.
What is protection and do you need it?
Well I can tell you if you google it you’ll get all sorts of answers! For some it be linked to safety or the feeling of being safe, it could more of a visual picture of bubble wrap or a warm blanket.
In the financial protection world, it means that it the worst happens to a person, an individual or a business, such as illness, serious illness or death, then a sum of money is provided by way of an insurance policy, for which premiums have been paid.
I’m a big believer that’s money doesn’t bring happiness, but it does bring choice. Choice to pay a bill, like a mortgage, rather than have no choice because there is no salary coming in.
Do you need a specialist?
If you are ill and you google your health symptoms online, it can be counterproductive. You can get a match to your initial query/problem, but it’s probably a fix to an individual symptom rather than a solution to the problem, and the worry still exists, because did you get the right answer?
What you really need to do is see a doctor, someone who specialises in medicine, who can assess the whole situation and determine the best course of action for the body as a whole, a specialist in their field. In fact, you could go one step further and see a consultant who has chosen to specialise further in a particular field. Taking this as a route, rather than googling your symptoms means that you are more likely to achieve a better outcome.
Why am I a specialist? I have experience in my areas of financial services including mortgages, pensions & investments, but I want to work solely in protection as that is where my interest and my passion is and with that comes knowledge and experience. I’ve niched down.
I can talk with my clients about their needs for income protection, critical illness cover, life insurance and health insurance and recommend a suitable solution. My clients know that a specialist has assessed their whole situation and recommended the best course of action for them or their family as a whole.
