The off-season is well underway, but British curling selection is just around the corner.
The application deadline was several weeks ago, but the selection for the programme is due in or around the first week of June.
Few Scottish athletes have stepped away from the elite game. However, Cortina 2026 Olympic skip Rebecca Morrison is one of three who have announced their retirement. Another is 2022 Olympic gold medallist Hailey Duff, who recently announced her decision to retire.
Duncan Menzies, although not part of the British curling programme in recent years, has also taken a step back from playing with the highly successful Team Bryce.
Team Bryce recently became a global talking point when it was announced they’d be playing a mixed nationality team this coming season. As Duncan departs, Cammy Bryce has been in talks with Kerr Drummond, brother of British curling head coach Greg Drummond. Kerr, who now lives in Canada and has played in three briers, Canada’s national championship, has offered his services to the team while they play across the water.
Team Bryce will play as a five with Karsten Sturmay. Sturmay has competed in various competitions with Team Bryce in previous seasons, and his teammates Robin McCall and Scott Hyslop will continue.
Rebecca and Hailey’s departures leave vacancies in both of British Curling’s top women’s teams.
Team Henderson, a team of five last season, might continue with the remaining four for the upcoming season. Sophie Jackson, Jen Dodds and Sophie Sinclair, will be searching for their fourth player.
On the men’s side, no departures have been announced so far. Duncan McFadzean is back from injury, will he return to team Whyte? Will they play as a five or will Craig Waddell return to play with his brother on team Waddell? Most would assume Olympians Team Mouat will continue as a four. Orrin Carson has aged out of juniors, could he join a men’s team or will his full team move to men’s with him.
All will be announced in the near future as the athletes now work towards the Alps in 2030!
