Comments

From all of us at Steyning Rugby we wish everyone the very best of new years...We are hoping to be building our club in the coming months, old and new players of all ages sharing in our wonderful sport.
Updates on Minis, Seniors and Touch rugby programmes will be out in the coming days.

Keep well and look forward to seeing you call in the coming weeks.
Exercising pull-ups and sit-ups behind door 24, is Jonny Burfiend. A proper good bloke with no rugby sense, Jonny was easily the fastest man in Sussex, with rapid times that only our main man Usain can beat! However, due to an unfortunate injury, where his hamstrings closely resemble Cheese strings, Jonny can only hop faster than everyone else. With a sidestep that would earn him a 10 from Craig Revel Horwood, Jonny could dance around a rugby team in a telephone box. When he isn't rescuing cats, controlling his fire-hose or demonstrating fire-safety to primary school children - important job, I know - Jonny occasionally comes to training and even more rarely, a game... 🎄

2 Days to go! Standing proudly in door 23 today is our esteemed captain Peter Carter! Whilst trying his hardest to lead from the front, coaching our superb minis and smashing training, he is known mostly for his tragic tackles, blood curdling singing and the frailest fingers in Sussex. Some say he can tackle sheep better than he can tackle players... With kicking as patchy as his hairline, wayward kicking, and fingers only functional on full moons, we wouldn’t want him any other way! 🎄

#RugbyatSteyning
Day 22, an absolute cracker of a player and an even better person - Charlie Ansell! Charlie is a ho**er and like any proper front row player, he thinks he's fast and has the hands of a back and that's one of the reasons why we love him - he's got a great imagination! Charlie throws his lineout balls as straight as Mr Tickle's arms and for whatever reason, has decided that growing a mullet is a really good idea... Despite being another club member who is built like a hobbit, Charlie has a good engine and gets around the pitch really well; he's often found hugging the wing like all natural ho**ers... 🎄

#RugbyatSteyning
Day 21 and it's a particularly hairy member of the squad - Daryl Beazley. Based on pure appearances alone, Daryl is the member of the club who is most likely to be seen wandering the campsite of Glastonbury at half 4 in the morning hunting for a fine comb to brush his majestic beard and 'tache. Despite having lovely groomed features, we personally believe that he should grow out his hair so that he looks more like the iconic Chabal! He's a good laugh and particularly stubborn which created a unique situation when he went on holiday recently... A proper utility player who is a dab hand at all positions, we enjoy having Daryl in our team!🎄

#RugbyatSteyning
Door 20 is an actual concrete wall - Jacob Brown. Jeff is a serious character who loves a huge tackle... He's a great lad who loves nothing better than lining up an opposition player and delivering an enormous hit. Built like a concrete block, Jeff is a larger than life character who takes touring very seriously. He's a cracking bloke with a bellowing laugh with a big beaming smile; he's tough as nails and we love having him around! 🎄

#RugbyatSteyning
Behind door 19 is one of the veterans of the club - Chris Kelly. Pops as he is known, is a great bloke full of stories and anecdotes about rugby, his times at the Norfolk Arms and his travels to Japan. Don't be fooled by his age, he's still a fierce competitor who loves a chest day in the gym. Often heard racing his Jag around the back lanes of Steyning like a boy racer, Pops still has plenty of youth still in him. Pops has the widest catalogue of excuses for mistakes in games, it's actually quite impressive. Despite the moaning, Pops has invested a lot of time and money into the club and we all love him dearly! 🎄

#RugbyatSteyning
Surprised there's a door here because usually he knocks down everything in his way - Day 18 - Gareth Nicholls. Affectionately known as Gareth (Original, great banter, I know...), there is absolutely nothing this bloke won't put his face in front of. A key player in baby-sitting his number 10 in defence, Gareth loves shouting his way around the pitch and literally scares his opposition into dropping the ball. As a PE teacher, you would have thought that he would be fully equipped and never forget his kit. However, there have been multiple occasions where he's either forgotten his boots or turned up with a pair that just doesn't fit? 🎄

#RugbyatSteyning
Running at speed behind door 17 is the elusive James Salisbury! Elusive in more ways than one, Jimmy is a cracking player and adds some electric pace and electrifying try scoring during his first season. He was so successful that we awarded him the coveted 'Portinator' an award for the player who played in the 'Steyning Fashion'. But straight to the point! Warning: 🚨📣 This is no longer an Advent Calendar post; it's a wanted poster! Jimmy has been missing in action for far too long and we're becoming anxious to have our favourite Vin Diesel look-a-like, winger back! If you see him, please remind him that on the occasional Saturday we play ruggers. Thanks!

Emerging through door 16, head first, is the first of the three Wise (ish) men. Matt Hodson - Mooey. Mooey has been dedicated to Steyning rugby for many years. From player to head coach and Minis coach, Matt has really helped grow the club and move it forward. Often seen with a semi-permanent frown and a permanent grump, it's quite unbelievable when he starts singing and sweet, sweet music erupts from his scowling head! A lovely bloke, who is an excellent electrician (I haven't been electrocuted yet...) and always happy to bore the ears off you talking the ins and outs of rugby. 🎄

The player behind door 15 (Got to keep on track!) is Michael Jacot! It's amusing that Jacot has any time to play land based sports as he is completely infatuated with boats. Known as Admiral Beanpole/ Captain Birdseye, Jacot really loves 'bonding sessions' on his little dinghy. A really good bloke who is unbelievably blessed with musical talent and a beautiful singing voice, it's just a shame about his banter. 🎄

Due to Christmas circumstances, I missed yesterday's post - sorry if it ruined your evenings...

Day 14. Special door for a special bloke - Tom H***e. Some say that the Swiss Army Knife was invented based upon the versatility of Tom. Front row? Played it. Anywhere in the forwards? Played it. Backline? Played it. A greatly passionate Welshman who embraces all the usual stereotypes in excellent fashion... 🐑 Hero of a bloke with quads that even Dwayne Johnson would be jealous of. However... It appears that due to the size of his quads, it often appears that Tom is running in slow-motion... 🎄

Strolling out behind door number 13 with the same pace and intensity as he has on the rugby pitch, is Matt Laker! Matt is a great bloke with a plethora of stories that never cease to crack us up. He is the epitome of amateur rugby player with the serious bod, hilarious chat, feigning injury and giving the ref 'coaching' and 'advice'. Well renown in the community as a PE teacher, it never really got any better than that... Great guy, excellent coach and hilarious story teller. He's a good'un.

Day 12 is a real club favourite: Richard Addy. Nutter as he is affectionately known has probably the most appropriate nickname... He causes problems to the opposition on the pitch and his own team mates off it. He enjoys shandies at the bar and loves chatting nonsense with anyone he's with. Rich is a really good character who has done a huge amount for charity and would give his time to help absolutely anyone. Proper bloke.

Behind door 11 is a big character; Sam Hutton. A new player to the team and a huge asset, Shrek (as he is known in some circles 😂) has a passion for scrummaging that would make Santa's passion for presents look very tame. Sam loves his scrummaging so much that he even has a hat that says: No scrum, no win... Sam has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to our front row and we are delighted to have him along. He's a good player and an even better bloke.

Just like all other number 10s at Christmas time, there's a party behind this door and dancing his socks off is Ben Taylor. Big Ben works hard around the pitch, with a good motor and attitude to his performances. Ben is coachable and is a quick learner which is a big surprise for a second row. Despite being a second rower, Ben is very zen; nothing fazes him - he is Mr Miyagi reincarnated. Legend.
