WALTER PARAZAIDER, FOUNDING MEMBER OF CHICAGO, DIES AT 81
Walter Parazaider, founding member, saxophonist, flutist, and woodwind specialist of Chicago, has died at the age of 81 following complications from Alzheimer's disease.
A member of Chicago from its earliest days in 1967 until his retirement from touring in 2017, Parazaider helped create one of the most distinctive sounds in rock music. Inspired by the idea of combining rock music with horns, he was instrumental in assembling the group that evolved from The Big Thing to Chicago Transit Authority and ultimately Chicago.
Born in Maywood, Illinois, Parazaider studied classical clarinet and earned a degree in classical performance from DePaul University before helping launch the band that would become one of the most successful recording acts in history.
Alongside Lee Loughnane and James Pankow, he formed the core of Chicago's celebrated horn and woodwind section. His musicianship can be heard throughout the band's catalog, but he is perhaps best remembered for two unforgettable performances: the soprano saxophone solo on the 1973 hit "Just You 'n' Me" and the flute solo on "Colour My World," one of the most beloved ballads of the 1970s.
Over the course of nearly six decades, Chicago sold more than 100 million records worldwide and produced classics including "25 or 6 to 4," "Saturday in the Park," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," "If You Leave Me Now," "Old Days," and "You're the Inspiration."
Parazaider remained one of the band's enduring constants through numerous lineup changes before retiring due to health concerns. In 2021, he publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, facing the challenge with characteristic optimism and gratitude for the support of his family.
He is survived by his wife, JacLynn, and daughters Laura and Felicia.
Walter Parazaider helped create a sound unlike any other in rock history. Through his saxophone, flute, clarinet, and musical vision, he left an indelible mark on generations of listeners.
