16th century country home of Leonard and Virginia Woolf. Nestled in the heart of rural Sussex, Monk’s House is a tranquil 17th-century weatherboarded cottage inhabited by Leonard and the novelist Virginia Woolf from 1919 until Leonards death in 1969.

Get to know Leonard and Virginia Woolf and the wider Bloomsbury Group by visiting Monk's House. Full of their favourite things, the house appears as if they just stepped out for a walk. The Woolfs bought Monk's House for the 'shape and fertlity and wildness of the garden'. Today, the lovely cottage garden contains a mix of flowers, vegetables, orchards, lawns and ponds.

We're staying in the south-east for this week's #FridayFinds - some great artefacts recently discovered in the garden at Monk's House in East Sussex! Late Victorian and early 20th century domestic waste including scallop shells, glass bottles, clay pipe and lots of ceramics. Perhaps there are even some items in there that Virginia and Leonard Woolf might have used when they lived in Monk's House...

We’re feverish with excitement tonight—tomorrow we go in to Lewes to bid for a house that has taken our fancy, so much that we are determined to sell the one I bought the other day (the Round House, Lewes). Thirty people it is said, will bid against us—heaven knows where we shan’t land ourselves.
