There are dogs… and then there is Luna. ❤️

Luna came to Forget Me Not Reading Rescues under circumstances that still make me shake my head.

She was originally brought over from Romania by another rescue, only to spend the next three years sitting in kennels. Three years of waiting. Three years of watching life pass by.

Luna was one of four dogs we took over from other rescues when they could no longer pay their kennel fees. Their solution? To send the dogs back to Romania.

But that’s not a solution.

When you rescue a dog—whether from the UK, Romania, or anywhere else in the world—you make a commitment to that dog. You provide rescue back-up for life. You don’t choose the easy option and send them back to a country where they have little or no chance of finding the happy life they deserve.

And so Luna became a Forget Me Not, just like Nala, Daisy and Abbie, who were also left unfunded in kennels.

From the moment I learned about Luna, she was exactly the kind of dog I would have wanted to help. The kind of dog who just needed someone to see beyond the kennel walls.

Then fate stepped in.

By chance, Luna was spotted online by a wonderful lady who understands dogs like Luna—the quirky ones, the complicated ones, the ones who need a little extra understanding and patience.

And today…

Luna left kennels.

Today she started a three-month foster-to-adopt placement and, for the first time in a very long time, her future looks bright.

This is why we do what we do.

Not every dog gets hundreds of applications. Not every dog has an easy story. But every dog deserves a chance.

A special thank you, as always, to Danielle and her amazing team at OEH Kennels for everything they have done for Luna over the years and for helping to coordinate her transition from kennel life into a home.

The care, dedication and kindness shown to Luna during her time with you have not gone unnoticed. Knowing she was safe and cared for made all the difference.

I am forever grateful to you all. ❤️🐾

Good luck, Luna. We are all rooting for you. ❤️

🐾 One of the best things about dog rescue is working with like-minded people. 🐾

This year has seen many dogs come into the fold of Forget Me Not Reading Rescues and, ultimately, into the loving arms of the people who help keep the wheels of the rescue turning.

Our latest little arrival is Chase, a tiny Chihuahua who is completely blind. Despite his challenges, Chase has already captured hearts and is beginning his journey towards a brighter future.

Chase’s foster home is with my wonderful friend Cat, who organised his transition from start to finish and welcomed him with open arms. From coordinating arrangements to ensuring he arrived safely, Cat has been there every step of the way.

Rescue simply cannot function without people like Cat. The time, dedication, compassion and countless hours given behind the scenes are what make it possible for dogs like Chase to get the second chance they deserve.

Thank you, Cat, for everything you do for the dogs. ❤️

Welcome to Forget Me Not Reading Rescues, Chase. We can’t wait to watch your next chapter unfold. 🐾💕

🌟 🐾 Dog of the Week – Meet Mouse 🐾 🌟

Beautiful Mouse is an approximately 18-month-old Saluki/Lurcher cross looking for a foster home with the potential to adopt. ❤️

Mouse is currently in Reading Berkshire. Meetings are essential with a careful transition into the home.

Mouse is a gentle, affectionate girl with the sweetest nature. She loves being around people and is looking for a family who can help her continue to build her confidence and settle into home life.

She gets on well with both people and other dogs and would thrive in a calm, loving environment where she isn’t left for long periods. Mouse is currently a little underweight but is steadily gaining condition and is expected to be around 20kg at her ideal weight.

We’re looking for a foster-to-adopt home, giving Mouse the opportunity to settle in while ensuring she and her new family are the perfect match. This can be a wonderful way to help a rescue dog transition into their forever home while giving adopters the chance to get to know her properly.

One of the most powerful and humbling things we have witnessed is the bond between a dog and their person at the end of life.

There is often debate about whether dogs should be allowed to see their owners before they die. From our experience, having supported this on four occasions, we believe these moments matter.

Dogs may not understand death in the way humans do, but they understand love, presence, absence and change. We have seen dogs settle after seeing their person, quietly lying beside them, sniffing, watching and simply being close. There is something profoundly moving about allowing that final connection.

These moments are never easy. They are raw, heartbreaking and deeply personal. But they can also bring comfort — not only to families, but sometimes to the dogs too.

Every situation is different, and there is no single right answer for everyone. But we should never underestimate the depth of the human–animal bond or the importance of kindness and dignity in those final moments.

🐾 WHO SHOULD ASSESS RESCUE DOGS? 🐾

This is something we feel strongly about.

A rescue dog assessment should never be based on a quick 10-minute meeting or a simple “temperament test.”

Dogs arriving into Forget Me Not Reading Rescues are often frightened, overwhelmed, exhausted or shut down. Some have travelled long distances, some have experienced trauma, and many are simply trying to cope.

So who should assess rescue dogs?

✅ Experienced rescue assessors
✅ Veterinary professionals where health or pain may be influencing behaviour
✅ Skilled foster carers who can observe dogs in a home environment
✅ Behaviour specialists where needed

The truth is that the most valuable assessment often happens over time.

We look at:

🐾 Body language
🐾 Handling and touch tolerance
🐾 Dog and people interactions
🐾 Home behaviour
🐾 Walks and triggers
🐾 Recovery from stress
🐾 Confidence and coping skills
🐾 Medical or pain-related factors

At Forget Me Not Reading Rescues, we believe in understanding the dog in front of us — not labelling them too quickly.

Assessment should be about learning, supporting and matching dogs safely and fairly, not simply passing or failing them.

Because rescue dogs deserve patience, understanding and the chance to show us who they really are ❤️

And that is exactly what we are working towards with every dog in our care — to know them. To really know them is to love them, and through thoughtful assessment we can find them the right home.

📸 Pictured is our beautiful Luna up at the OEH kennels, where the people caring for her genuinely know and understand her. They take the time to learn who she is and provide us with excellent assessments that help guide the next steps in her journey.

So if you are thinking about rescuing, remember to ask what assessment process a rescue uses. A good assessment is not about judging a dog — it is about understanding them.
