Scammers are actively targeting owners of missing pets, preying on their vulnerability during a stressful time. These sophisticated scams involve using "scouts" and fake profiles of individuals who regularly assist pet owners.

How the Scam Unfolds:

1. **Initial Contact:** The scam begins when a "scout" or a fake profile comments on a missing pet post, setting the stage for interaction.

2. **Gathering Details:** Once the scammers obtain the owner's contact information, they proceed to the next phase.

3. **WhatsApp Deception:** They send messages via WhatsApp, often including links to fake groups that claim to help locate the missing pet.

4. **Financial Demand:** These fraudulent groups then demand money to participate in the search. While amounts can vary, it has been highlighted that they often request around £300 to "secure a booking."
If owners question the amount, scammers may suggest paying half upfront and half later.

Emotional Manipulation:

Scammers exploit emotional distress, using manipulative language such as, "If you loved and cared about your pet, you would pay." They capitalize on the desperation of pet owners.

Widespread Impact:

Sadly, this scam is not new but has recently been impacting not only owners but also legitimate groups and organizations and now individual profiles.
