Using rewards with children is a widely debated topic. While some believe that rewards are an effective way to motivate children to behave positively (the camp I belong to), some argue that rewards may have negative long-term effects on children’s behaviour.
Some of those arguments against rewards include things such as encouraging children to focus solely on the reward and not on the behaviour itself. That they can create an expectation for children that they should always receive something in return for their behaviour, and that they might develop an over-reliance on rewards which leads to a limited sense of motivation.
I would argue that while some of this may be true in some situations, at the end of the day it’s all about how behavioural reward systems are implemented. If used correctly, rewards can actually help children build their intrinsic motivation by providing a positive experience that they are likely to repeat on their own, without the need for external rewards.
They also:
🔴 Give children clear and tangible goals to work towards
🟠Help build confidence and self-esteem
🟡 Reinforce positive behaviour
🟢 Strengthens parent-child relationship
🔵 Encourage clear, open and honest communication
It’s also important to note that we live in a token economy, where people work in return for money. By introducing children to such concepts early, it teaches them concepts such as earning, negotiating, budgeting, responsibility, planning, and saving from an early age. Most importantly, however, is to remember that a reward system is not a standalone solution, but used in conjunction with other parenting approaches and a sound knowledge base. Done right, it can result in a fun way for parents and children to develop good habits and behaviours that will serve them well throughout their lives.

Crafts are a great way to engage children, not to mention they’re fun for guardians too! When it comes to ADHD children, some traditional crafts might feel restrictive or like just another chore they need to ‘sit through’. But by choosing the right type of craft, a lot of helpful tools can be integrated in the creation process.
Here’s some quick tips what to look for when picking crafting projects for ADHD children:
🔴 Pick supplies that double as sensory play (modelling clay/dough, crinkly paper, fluffy yarn, paints, etc.)
🟠Further incorporate sensory play by using your hands as much as possible (fingerpainting, folding paper, etc.)
🟡 Combine the project with activities such as gathering supplies (leaves, flowers, twigs, shells, etc.)
🟢 Give your child the opportunity to stand up while crafting
🔵 Move around the room/home for different steps of the crafting process (kitchen, desk, floor, etc.)
🟣 Break the project into small, achievable steps
🔴 Take breaks
🟠Put on some music
And, if you like, this is also a great opportunity to include Happy Tokens or other behavioural awards! Give your child lots of opportunities to win rewards by completing small steps throughout the process. This will make finishing a craft an even bigger achievement!

Following our post about outdoor activities, let’s talk about all the ways to have fun when the weather is being less accommodating. Indoor activities are a great way to focus on sensory play, and they definitely don’t mean that the child has to ‘sit still’. There’s many ways to let children move about inside the home in a safe and still productive way. Here’s some ideas:
🔴 Crafting
🟠Baking
🟡 Acting out small scenes from favourite books/shows/films
🟢 Dancing/aerobics/other music-led exercise
🔵 Learn/practise playing an instrument
🟣 Make your own sensory bin
Don’t forget to break each task down into small, achievable steps and to take breaks. Moving around the home/doing different tasks in different rooms or locations can also help keep things active and engaging. As always, give your child(ren) lots of opportunities to earn rewards and acknowledge each achievement.

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping—so maybe you need some inspiration for you and your child. Staying active and engaged takes up a huge part of any child’s life, and ADHD children even more so! Here’s some things to do on those sunny days:
🔴 Swimming
🟠Animal engagement (such as a zoo, or walking a friend’s dog)
🟡 A day out at museums and eating out
🟢 Bring activities such as jumping rope to the park
🔵 Sports
🟣 Going on little foraging trips and collecting shells/leaves/acorns/etc.
Always remember to break tasks down into small, achievable steps and to take breaks. Listen to your child; it’s okay not to ‘finish’ something, or to come back to it later. It’s important to keep tasks achievable and to give your child(ren) lots of opportunities to earn rewards.
