MEDICINE SAFETY
When it comes to poisoning prevention, many families wrongly think safety caps are enough to keep children safe. But child-resistant packaging is NOT childproof.
It will slow a child down when they are trying to open a bottle or container, but some toddlers can work their way round it through sheer determination or brute force.
That’s why the best way to keep your child safe from poisoning is to keep harmful products out of reach or in a lockable cupboard.

According to gov.uk it is suggested that children must normally use a child car seat until they’re 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first.
Children over 12 or more than 135cm tall must wear a seat belt. You can choose a child car seat based on your child’s height or weight. This is the very minimum guidelines to think about whilst deciding if your child still needs a car seat. However, like when buying your very first car seat we highly recommend spending time to research and find out what is the best for you and your child. Watch out for our next post which provides you with some advise on choosing and using a car seat along with some useful websites that will help during your research.

Today is World Patient Safety Day. WHO known as the World Health Organisation, call on parents, caregivers, health practitioners, health care leaders, educators and communities, to unite in action to prevent avoidable harm in paediatric care and to build a safer, healthier future for every child, as part of the global effort.
This week in James Cook University Hospital, the paediatric departments have been involved in bringing awareness to patient safety specifically around safe care for every newborn and child. With lots of fun activities for the children to participate in. Yesterday our little Infection Control inspectors from the wards set off to check our staff are bare below the elbow, giving stickers and certificates to all who past their inspection, some children were able to participate in a competition to design our very own safety superhero! 🦸♂️
Throughout today online we will be looking at keeping children safe around the home, we will bring information from The Lullaby Trust on safe sleeping, Child Accident Prevention Trust on safety around medication and poisons and what to look out for if you suspect sepsis and much more.
