This post highlights the importance of attending the dentist regularly.

A patient came in for a routine recall visit where we were able to detect the presence of a failing amalgam filling. This filling must have been placed over 25 years ago and was not causing the patient any pain or discomfort. They were completely unaware that there may even be a problem.

During examination using good lighting and magnification, it was found that there were cracks present around the restoration. All options were discussed and explained and it was agreed that this tooth needed further investigation to avoid microbial leakage and irritation to the pulp or the tooth fracturing, which may ultimately lead to root canal treatment or extraction.

The old existing silver amalgam filling was removed under rubber dam isolation and it was confirmed that there was significant amount of decay with further cracks which were not visible whilst the filling was present.

The caries (decay) was cleaned carefully and the dentine sealed using a dentine bonding agent, in this case Optibond Fl. and prepared for a ceramic tooth coloured emax overlay to provide protection of the remaining tooth structure.

The tooth was ultimately restored by bonding the emax overlay using Variolink esthetic DC cement.
