Hello everyone! Postcard from the past 1939 Watchmaker Goldsmith - Calabria region 🇮🇹

The eagle, an animal sacred to, became the symbol of the Roman legions and official insignia starting with Gaius Marius, according to what Sallustius says. The banner was carried by an officer called aquilifer, literally "eagle bearer"
The eagle was not only a symbol but was considered sacred and its loss considered very serious, to be attributed to the anger of the gods towards the Romans: in fact for the latter it was very important to recover the eagles of Teutoburg and for those of Carrhae, so much so that the scene of the return of the insignia is represented on the emperor's armor in the statue of Prima Porta.
The sacredness of the eagle is well represented in De Bello Gallico, when Caesar tells of the eagle of the tenth legion, who, to encourage his comrades to land on the British beaches, garrisoned by the enemies, throws himself into the water and is immediately followed by his companions.

♥️Rome isn’t simply a city - it’s a living organism inhaling and exhaling time, blowing breath beneath peoples’ coats and carrying them where they ought to be.
And if Rome is a living organism, the Pantheon 🏛 must surely be its heart. Beating softly, but steadily, and unchanging with the times, you can hear the rhythm of the city echo through the Pantheon’s monumental columns and run down the cobblestone streets to the Tiber river where it will be carried in perfect tune.

♥️The "Ring Lady" of Herculaneum was a Roman woman who died around 45 years of age near the ancient waterfront of Herculaneum during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
She was found surrounded by her gold jewellery and still wearing emerald and ruby rings on her left hand. Her jewellery was in perfect condition.

🏛️ Roman crocodile armor, dating back to the 3 century AD, was a form of protective gear crafted from the tough hide of Nile crocodiles. The Romans likely adopted this type of armor during their conquests in Egypt and other regions where crocodiles were prevalent.
Crocodile armor was not as widely used as other types of Roman armor, and scholars believe that it might have been worn during processions or ceremonies, rather than in combat. As a result, crocodile armor was more of a rare and exotic choice rather than a standard issue for Roman soldiers.
